UCLA is allowing 6.1 yards per carry, 307 yards rushing per game, 3 rushing TDs per game. This one is on Zack Moss to win.

Not if Huntley pulls it and runs which could have good results (think U of A Tate)? Utah needs to scheme a ‘ground-and-pound’ game, they can’t afford a shootout with Rosen?
-

Ultimately it should be a combination of both, keeping the UCLA swiss cheese defense confused and cheese-like.

Rosen did not practice on Monday, he may not be available for Friday’s game.

If Huntley runs more than 5 times I don’t think it looks good for us. Aside from the fact that he probably won’t last he’s no Kahlil Tate and it’s not even close. Our read option attack is predictable and doesn’t give the QB the same opportunities that AZ’s offense does.
Huntley averages 3.6 yrd/carry with a long of 33 agains some pretty poor competition.
Kahlil Tate averages 13.6 yrd/carry with longs of 82,76,75,and 71.I hope we see Moss/DHC with 40+ combined carries and a lot of TE’s around the LOS. Grind out yardage and throw in a few play action passes and hope to eek out a close one keeping our defense fresher than UCLA’s in the 4th.

If you watched the Hans Olsen breakdown for the week. It’s not about play calling, or who runs, it’s all about line play. This line cannot seem to understand how to communicate or even where they need to block on each play. It seems like after some initial improvement they have really regressed these last two weeks.
If the line can block as they are supposed to you can call successive run plays and have some success, if not we will see a continued poor run attack. This will negatively impact the pass game.
-
UtahParticipant
This is why I said after the game that I wondered if Harding packed it in after being demoted. The OL isn’t the same. The improvement isn’t there. Wonder if he knows he’s leaving at the end of the year and the desire isn’t there.
-
Utahute72Participant
I think we are missing Ike Asiata much more than we thought we would. There is really no true leader among that group to pull them together and get them on the same page. I remember after about the second or third game when we were stumbling around Ike gathered the OL on the sideline and just ripped them. It was right after that we went on a tear offensively.

UtMtBikerParticipant
That would be a pretty poor exit strategy for a college football coach. I think you’re under estimating the competitive nature of any coach that has found success at this level. I’m sure the fire is there. This comes back to a new system. The system is new to Harding too and he’s having to evolve his coaching to meet the demands of it.
Scraping our power run identity that we built over the last 10 years in hopes of becoming the next great spread offense is looking like a huge mistake.
-
RickParticipant
Harding is the assistant head coach. Losing the co-oc title wasn’t a demotion when he got tagged as the assistant head coach and a raise.
-
UteThunderParticipant
He certainly wasn’t promoted.
-
RickParticipant
Well he is the highest paid assistant on Kyle’s staff.

last week we were without agasiva, not sure how significant that impact, but worth noting
-
Utahute72Participant
And I think he played hurt the week before. So that probably speaks to the depth on this line.

Fantastic points – thanks – and, thanks for the tip about Olsen’s breakdown on the Oregon game. Very illuminating!!

That’s a nice stat to see. I’m to the point that all I can think about is how does Utah blow it and not take advantage of the run game…….. So frustrating.
-
EagleMountainUteParticipant
Trying to remember how ASU had a terrible rush defense to…yeah two or three touches in the first half for Moss.
-
PlainsUteParticipant
I guess my point is that I would count on the ground game (yeah, mix in some Huntley runs, etc) to be the focus. If it is not, well I think that is on the OC for not exploiting a glaring weakness. And hopeful the OC is looking at film to see the root cause of those stats so that the Utes, can, in fact, realise those type of stats. If he doesn’t, again, that is on him.

-
UteThunderParticipant
Awesome. Moss will probably end the day with 8 to 12 carries for 50-65 yards.

Yeah, and Stanford was ranked 100th in pass defense and we couldn’t pass on them. I don’t get excited about those stats anymore. I’d just like us to be able to go out and play good, balanced ball and beat someone. Oh, and score TD’s from the Red Zone.
-
ladyinredParticipant
There is something broken about the run game when Huntley is playing QB. Maybe it’s the O line getting confused on assignments, but then Moss’s carries necessarily become reduced as the game wears on and we get behind and need to chuck it down the field to try to make up points quickly.
I don’t care if Huntley’s completion % is better than Williams, with Williams in somehow the run game works better, the defense is on the field less and subsequently the whole team overall looks better.
I’m not saying they can’t get the run game going with Huntley, but we haven’t seen it look good since USC.
-
cjd1Participant
I agree. Run game with Moss is much better with Williams then Huntley. I think Moss needs to know when he is getting the ball to rush hard.
-
ladyinredParticipant
It probably is really just this simple. He needs to be able to run with purpose immediately, not stand around in the pocket tap dancing with Huntley until a decision is made.
-
UtahParticipant
My only retort is this: we know Moss and Huntley can play together because they’d were great together in high school.
I still blame the OL. When they make their blocks, the read is quicker, which allows everyone to look better.
For whatever reason, the OL cannot block the RPO. Might need Taylor to bring in his own guy this winter.
-
Utahute72Participant
But the system was different.
