One glaring problem next season for the Utes. With Huntley at QB, Moss and even Shyne can forget about 100+ rushing games. Huntley pulls it every damn time. I get it, Huntley wants to make all the plays but this needs to be coached out of him and let the RB’s do their job or ‘design’ running plays and forget the RPO. Moss had his best games with Williams @ QB. With Huntley, barely a hundred rushing if that?
Also, we better expect injuries next season with Huntley, it’s so hard for a QB who runs AT the defense to play all 12 games. I cringed every time he ran the ball, Huntley isn’t ‘shifty’ like say Tate at Arizona. He runs North and South which leads me to the next question… Who’s even the projected back up QB next season, Tuttle? Wouldn’t surprise me if Utah looks the Juco route again, so far it’s paid off with Thompson and Williams. Then Whittingham wouldn’t have to burn Tuttle’s RS (if he honors his commitment of course).Utah should be deep at WR, Covey’s back. Simpkins and especially Nacua will be better. Simpkins could really be a ‘star’ in my opinion. The O-line loses one and really seemed to come together the last month. They have always played the ‘run’ well, just not so good pass blocking. That needs to get fixed. I believe the RPO is what really hampered the O-line, not knowing what your QB is doing hence the constant ‘ineligible player downfield’ calls. Taylor could really streamline this offense, there’s just too many different formations which kills the momentum with players switching in and out and gives the opponents defense a breather.I’m not going to touch on the defense because honestly, it’s going to be what we expect. The secondary might possibly be the best the Utes have ever had and that’s saying a lot. I would like to see Hansen comeback but if he goes to the NFL, good luck to him. Barton and Anae are possible 1st Team All-Pac 12?Special Teams should also be what we expect, and Covey could be a ‘game changer’?So… Though the season didn’t turn out the way I expected (7-8 wins), there’s plenty to talk about until next season.GO UTES! -

Good point. Williams and Bateman will both be gone, and I think Lisk will too (not sure how good he was).
That leaves us with Huntley, Shelley and Tuttle, yeah? Shelley is also undersized if I remember correctly.

Just looked it up out of curiosity.
I guess Lisk will be a sophomore and is a walk on.
Apparently we also have a guy named Jason Money, was is a returned missionary walk on and will be a sophomore as well. Never heard of him until now.

At this point it’s purely guesswork, but how good is Shelley supposed to be?

Thompson and Blair will be huge difference makers next season on the defense. Need to shore up the middle with Mokofisi and Lotulelei leaving.
I agree absolutely with Moss and Huntley relationship. The game film against Washington where Huntley was riding Moss like a bike is proof he just can’t give up the ball. Huntley has to play smarter he has to learn a little humility. I need to make it through 12 games if I ever want to see 15. He goes down against Zona and he was difference for four games. This RPO thing is above my knowledge. Seems like it would be multiple lineman wandering down field. It was usually only guy being an idiot and wandering.

I actually think we will be better inside on defense next year. I think we miss Mokofisi more than we miss Lowell. Lowell didn’t have the best work ethic and rested on his natural size and talent. He didn’t develop much. I think with Leki Fotu for sure, and Penisini, Tonga, and Pututau we will still be very good inside. I think we will be more explosive and get a better pass rush with these guys too.
In fact I would like to see Maxs Tupai bulk up to 280-290 and move inside as an interior pass rusher. Get more explosive up front.

I’m not worried about Huntley. As much as we think we know about what he needs, he knows more.
He will come back 20lbs heavier and better prepared mentally to make the right choices in the run game.
He knows NFL QB’s get paid to throw the ball, not run.

Argree. Arguing about scheme with a lot talent returning is a great problem to have. Defense will be more experienced. Offense will be more experienced. Huntley, Moss, Shyne, Cole all threatening the run with more experienced WRs options. Talent and experience wins games. Arizona, USC, Oregon and Utah will be the dangerous teams next year.

I hope we get a late December bowl game just to see how much this team improves and being healthy. It could be a really, really fun game.

Barton and Anae will be far from first team PAC12 players. I’d put Thompson as a possible option wayyyy before Barton. Next year’s secondary is going to be a definite strength. Linebackers need help, Dline needs to find that pass rush, o-line needs to figure out how to pass block and push the ball carrier forward. WR’s, RB’s, and QB should be fine. Covey, Vickers, Boyd, Thompson and Hampton are going to wreck some defenses.

Don’t sleep on Shelly..Kid has a big arm and is very mobile. If he’d been 6’3″ instead of 5’11” he would have gotten offers from some very high P5 programs.
