Can’t wait to for another 7-5 season and a trip to the bf bowl where we run over the University of Nobody Cares.

ironman1315Participant
Shut up PK.

The last time Gary Anderson was on staff the Utes were 13 – 0
-
utahsportsguyParticipant
the last time GA was on staff, we were playing in a G5 conference, but good try with the false equivlence.
-
gUrthBrooksParticipant
Are you saying THIS was a G5 defense? Checkmate! Stevenson Sylvestor (not pictured), Paul Kruger, Koa Misi, Sean Smith, Robert Johnson, Derrick Shelby, Brice McCain, Brandon Burton, Sealver Siliga, Christian Cox, Jo Dale, Brandon Burton
-
utahsportsguyParticipant
I’m saying that technically and literally we played against G5 competion for a majority of that year. I’m not questioning how good the team was (one of our best ever), but our competition was undoubtedly not (Alabama aside).
-
Puget UteParticipant
So what? This is a good hire and a solid addition to the coaching staff.
-
-
Puget UteParticipant
A high number of those guys are still on NFL rosters almost a decade later. And IIRC none of them were higher than 3* players, meaning the defensive coaching staff under GA identified them and coached them up.
The only people who are critical of having Gary Andersen back on staff as a Defensive Assistant either do not know much of anything about CFB, or are openly trolling.
-
EagleMountainUteParticipant
I am not openly trolly but it is debateable on my knowledge of CF.
This hire reminds of the DC hire. Everyone was selling it as a great hire and blah blah what he did in Mizzou. Turns out he was toxic waste and was in the way more than he helped.
I doubt his resume because I am a firm believer in what have you done lately kind of guy. GA has done nothing of note lately and has turned OSU into a dumpster fire. Excuse me for pumping the brakes or outright not wanting the man on staff.
-
Puget UteParticipant
There is a world of difference between being an HC and being a coordinator or assistant. Gary Andersen is an extremely competent defensive coach, as he proved when he was here. This is an extremely good hire, and he probably is far better than anybody else available.
-
EagleMountainUteParticipant
Ok this is what I want to discuss is this TRULY the best available. Or is it the best available Utah could get?
Anderson is doubling down on whatever Utah has already. I don’t think Anderson was the difference in any of the games this season. The difference is Utahs horrible offense failing to do exceed simple expectations again.
-
EagleMountainUteParticipant
Also the Associate Head coach title. A guy like Dennis Erickson didn’t need a fake title. It is odd I am not understanding the U’s motivation in bringing in a guy who left OSU under EXTREMELY questionable circumstances. He literally has nothing to demand yet you give him a title as if he is being groomed to be a head coach someday. The argument that he didn’t make it as a head coach becomes absolutely moot.
-
Puget UteParticipant
Dennis Erickson was Assistant Head Coach/RB coach his last two years.
-
EagleMountainUteParticipant
Erickson was of some value in that position advising Whitt on P5 conference. Offense hopefully he advised him on offense, not sure if he did. Idk riverboat Kyle was pretty crazy last season.
-
Puget UteParticipant
And Gary will bring another highly-experienced Defensive mind to the staff. I can’t understand why you don’t see this as a solid hire.

I am convinced we would have beat USC, Stanford, and probably WSU with a few tweaks on Defense. We would have shown better vs ASU and Oregon, though I don’t know if we could have won those games. We did very well on Defense vs UW.
Gary has his weaknesses, but he is a very good Defense scheme coach, easily our best since John Pease retired. In fact, he is probably our best Defensive coach since Gary Andersen left after the Sugar Bowl win…
-
FtheYParticipant
He seems to be a good recruiter as well. Maybe having Gary on staff gets us another recruit or two, which in turn, also helps the defense.

^This
If GA does nothing more in the day-to-day football operation than sharpen pencils and occasionally rub one out under his desk, and Utah gets nothing more than his ability to recruit, then this is still a good hire.
-
crazyuteParticipant
He has very good relations in Utah. Maybe we can get our hands on 2 or 3 instate kids that have been leaving with Gary on board now

-
EagleMountainUteParticipant
Maybe Gary Anderson will start to text you PK.
