I suspect if that’s the case, Tuttle will redshirt and Shelly will be the backup.
So, what happens in 2019?
If Tuttle is as good as advertised, how can you keep him on the bench?
If Huntley has a great season and leads us to the division championship, how can he not start? But, if Alabama can pull their starter for the second half of a national championship game – I guess anything could happen.
I’m sure Tuttle didn’t come here to sit out two seasons before seeing the field. I know QBs typically get hurt and if Huntley went down – then Tuttle could step in. But, you can’t count on that and you certainly don’t want that to happen. Tuttle is the highest rated QB we have ever had come to the Utes (Mitchell was from a different era, but also highly recruited).
So, how do you see this playing out.

1- the are discussing a rule change that says you can play in four games and still redshirt. So, we may see Tuttle this year and have him redshirt.
2- if we win the pac-12, then Tuttle will have to wait. And he’d be happy to do so. Then he could take over as a RS sophomore.
3- if we don’t win the pac-12 or especially the south, then have an open competition in the spring. If he wins it, great, but you lose Huntley. If not, great.
Honestly, I don’t think Huntley stays healthy. So, he will have a shot to take the job. And if Huntley stays healthy, I think we win the south.
As Utah fans, we can’t lose

I certainly don’t envy the coaches making this decision. They have to do everything possible to keep Tuttle from transferring. And a QB his caliber? I don’t think you want to sit him on the bench for 2 years. Especially when he could go to any school in the country.
On the other hand, I think Huntley will be REALLY good by the time he’s a senior and you can’t just tell him to sit on the bench because the new kid has tons of potential.
Obviously you play the one who will win games but if you’re not careful, someone is going to transfer.
Personally I think Huntley is the guy this year and next. Shelley might switch positions or leave the program. Tuttle is obviously the future and we need to keep him engaged.

Here’s my question. Why do bigger names at the quarterback position stay healthy? Are they just better overall athletes which in turn gives them a big name? This is an honest question I can’t seem to resolve. Darnold stayed healthy, despite a suspect offensive line. Browning is interesting, he had a quieter year this year, even with Dante Pettis, but stayed healthy, and he seems to be the least athletic QB overall. Wilkins stayed healthy, probably because of signal stealing, but whatever. Tate stayed healthy, despite being a heavy run QB. Herbert got hurt, but looks like he’ll be shouldering the offense this year. Montez looks like he’s right on the edge of being great, we’ll see how he holds up. Falk stayed pretty healthy, but also had one of the better offensive lines as far as pass blocking goes. Costello and Chryst were healthy, but that’s because they just gave the ball to Love. I think Huntley is a hybrid of Browning and Tate. Do we put it on the OC if he gets hurt? He’s got a good stable to hand the ball off to so he stays healthy and one of the better offensive lines in the conference. Washington and Stanford probably have the best. Why do these other programs seem to avoid QB injuries? I don’t really have an answer and would love some insight.

Luck unbelievable luck. Oh and maybe not running too much into merciless dlineman repeatedly. This increases your odds of getting lucky.

ChidojuanParticipant
That seems to be the only reasonable explanation. Darnold and Tate took some shots last year and Browning got destroyed a number of times, not least of which involved Bradley Anae. Maybe we get lucky this year. I hope so.

I actually think the better question is do they? I think we get a bit of tunnel vision when it comes to our own program and just think that because a player suits up they have stayed healthy. It is well documented that Troy played almost all of 2016 with a torn knee but he still started every game. Huntley’s injury was technically a pocket injury.
Darnold was the enigma but he is also a defensive end that plays QB and was very smart about the hits he took outside the pocket. It was relatively well documented that Falk and Montez were playing injured for the second half of last season missing game time. Browning injured his AC joint against Utah in 2016 and played the rest of the season with compromised arm strength and it showed against SC and Bama. Frankly I don’t think Browning is the same guy he was in early 2016 due to that injury. Stanford QB’s seemed to take turns getting hurt the last couple of seasons so have the Oregon State QB’s. Bro Rosen only played Utah 1 time in 3 years at UCLA. Tate appeared to have slowed a great deal after 5 weeks as a starter and only had the job because Dawkins got injured. Wilkins played all of last season but missed signifigant time in 2016 and his backups also went down. As you stated Herbert got injured as well last year.
My point is that there is an element of luck involved but looking at the last 3 or 4 seasons in the Pac12 no one is exempt from QB injuries. Odds are that the backup will start or play meaningful snaps in a few games every season so you better have them ready to go.

Huntley will start until he graduates. He is going to be amazing these next two years. Tuttle will RS this year and be either 2nd or 3rd string his frosh year. He will compete for starting job his soph year and may not get it. Not sure why everyone is sleeping on Shelley. He’s a stud. If Tuttle transfers so be it. He won’t, but if he did, who cares. Just means he wasn’t as good as we hoped.

I agree with you that Huntley will likely start the next two seasons. However, an early injury, and Tuttle comes in and is lights out – who knows …
I have heard good things about Shelley. But, from those in the know – Tuttle is a diferent caliber QB. That being said, we have seen 5 star QBs fail in college and seen 2 star kids shine. So, no one knows for sure.
Everything I hear and read about Tuttle leads me to believe that he is something special. I hope that proves to be true. I don’t think if Tuttle is a little better than Huntley in spring and August, that we will start him this season. It’s a good idea to let him sit and watch and learn like Andrew Luck did at Stanford or Darnell did at USC. I just don’t know if he becomes impatient in his second year.

I believe Tuttle has a chance to take the starting role. It will be Huntley though because he has a head start on the playbook. I also believed Huntley if Taylor was the OC his freshman year would have started.

I’d like to see Huntley start this season and if he gets hurt, bring in Shelley. I’d like Tuttle to be able to fully redshirt and not even entertain the notion of him getting a serious injury this early in his career (a la Jordan Wynn).
Next year, open up an all-out QB battle, and if Tuttle wins — he’s the starter. This coaching staff has already made it clear that they are willing to start a younger guy over an established senior if the younger guy is better.

EastCoastUteParticipant
Huntley will start but there is no way they will let tuttle red shirt. he’s way too good. If tuttle red shirts, he’ll probably leave to a different program to start getting experience earlier.
-
UtahParticipant
If he redshirted he wouldn’t leave.
Here is Utah’s timeline:
1- RS
2- back up Huntley
3- Start
If we redshirted him and he transferred, he would look like this:
1- RS
2- have to sit our due to transfer
3- battle for the starting job instead of inheriting it.
Makes no sense.
-
EastCoastUteParticipant
fair enough, i still think he’ll play back up. we’ll see though by this fall ha
-
TexanUteParticipant
If he is redshirted he could leave
– RS
– Division 2 – wouldn’t need to sit out
– 1 year starter at Power 5 school
– NFL DraftDon’t assume he needs to sit around in Utah for 2 years of no action.
-
ironman1315Participant
How often does this actually work to the benefit of the player?

I think this is the best case for us. Stretch quality QB play over as many years as possible
