Back in 2010 after Wynn went down with a shoulder injury, there was a clear need to recruit a JC QB or transfer QB as we had no backup to Wynn for the upcoming 2011 season. Well, except for Tyler Shreve who was a known head-case who beat up his high school coach. So after Shreve quit the team (big surprise), we literally had nobody, other than Brian Blechen and Griff Robles who had both been switched to defense. We went into the 2011 season with Wynn and nobody else. Only a complete fool would think that would turn out well. When Chow came in and had to scrounge up Hays from a Nebraska Community College that had cut its football program, I was convinced Kyle Whittingham was an absolute imbecile when it came to the QB position. Washington that same year had 8 scholarship QBs.
So, as expected, in 2011 we had a complete disaster at the QB position with Wynn going down early and Chow having to use a rec league hack, Hays, as a starter against PAC 12 competition. It was a miracle we were bowl eligible that season.
Going into 2012, you’d think Whittingham would have learned from that ridiculous mistake and gone out and found a couple JC QBs. No, we again counted on Wynn, a QB who had not made it through more than four consecutive games without a serious injury, and were counting on true freshmen recruits as Wynn’s backups. When I asked the moron editors on Utezone why we weren’t actively recruiting a JC QB since Wynn was obviously a huge risk, their response was that we didn’t want to scare away incoming freshmen QBs Travis Wilson and Chase Hansen. Two true freshmen were being counted on to backup a QB who was already known to be a China-doll. WestCoastCutthroat beats his wife. Predictably, 2012 was again a disaster at the QB position.
2013: saw Wilson struggle as a sophomore who had been rattled by being thrown into the lions’ den unprepared as a freshman. Again, no reliable backup. We brought in Adam Shulz who had no other P5 offers and couldn’t even start for Houston this year.
2014: Kyle Whittingham finally wakes up and finds a reasonable backup, albeit, a backup who has an obvious hitch in his throwing motion that prolongs his release so badly the defense can easily react to his throws before the ball is in the air.
2015: We go into the season with two Senior QBs and nothing behind them except Chase Hansen. Instead of preparing Chase Hansen to at least compete for playing time at QB next year, Kyle switches him to defense and he gets injured.
2016: We find ourselves in an even worse position than 2011 at the QB position. No returning QB with any meaningful playing time in the program. Troy Williams was heavily recruited out of high school, but not heavily recruited out of JC. He would be a reasonable backup, but to count on him as being a starter is ridiculous. Furthermore, he’s a running QB, he’ll more than likely miss several games due to injury next year. Dan Sorensen is sexually attracted to teenage boys. Who do we have behind Williams?? Pick-6 Manning?? Cox, who lobs every pass?
I don’t think you can find another P5 program that has bungled the QB position like Utah has. What Kyle doesn’t understand is the QB position is more important than an entire defensive unit. He just doesn’t get it, and never will. If you really care about this football program, you will cease to support it while we have a head coach who continues to screw up the most important position on the field.
