Yea, for whatever reason kwhitt is immune to real criticism from the utehub fans.  Based on the article I would also add that coach K not being or connected to the bubble culture also hurts.  I guess you’re much more forgiving if your part of the clan.

      Eight seasons
      Whittingham • 4-5, 3-6, 2-7, 5-4, 6-3, 5-4, 3-6, 6-3. Total: 34-38 (.472).
      Krystkowiak • 3-15, 5-13, 9-9, 13-5, 13-5, 11-7, 11-7, 8-5. Total: 73-66 (.525).
      Past five seasons
      Whittingham – 25-20 (.555).
      Krystkowiak – 56-29 (.659).

Or, Kyle built up quite a bit of goodwill before joining the PAC-12? I mean, he has won us a Natty or got us as close as ever. Whereas Larry’s closest is top 16. Further, while there is in year development, I haven’t felt like Larry has developed this team year over year. Whitt, on the other hand, not only develops in year but also develops year over year.

Part of the clan? **Eye roll**

It’s apples and oranges comparing these two sports programs. Fb and bb success don’t really map to each other. Ute fan perception of our standing in the two sports is different.

We look at the PAC-12 and only UCLA (by a long shot) and Arizona (we’re in the ballpark) really have more to offer historically than Runnin’ Ute hoops.

In football, we’re much farther down the chain with a lot of catching up to do.

In short: in football, we know we’re still building a legacy. In basketball, we feel like we already have one and should be capitalizing on it.

I don’t think they are immune. I went to grad school in the Pac 10 and was familiar with their FB and BB. When we joined, I wanted to compete for championships right up front. However, I am also realistic enough to realize it is a long road for schools moving up in the ranks. FSU was an exception everyone else would like to repeat, but most will have to pay their dues year by year. Sometimes we talk about doing better like it should be so easy. Realistically, we could easily be worse off. Perspective from someone that has been here since the 60s.

All time win percentage of other PAC 12 Coaches at current school

        .444, .555, .417, .404, .360, .111, .768, .333, .333, .665, .685, .500

Can you tell me which one is coach Whit? I’ll give you a hint, he’s in the top 3.  But since you chose to be selective on which stats you looked at, this won’t matter to you.

My thought on this is, Larry is a good coach. But his problem is year over year development. Kyle’s year to year trend is generally up. Larry needs to get into the NCAAs at least once more (if that once is a deep run) to justify his contract.

Since Kragthorpe oh so rudely didn’t include my response to his Twitter poll, I’ll state it again here: Kyle is directly tied to the pinnacle of Utah football with the 2004 and 2008 seasons and that will build a lot of goodwill. Larry has no such luxury-the pinnacle of Utah basketball was Majerus and the ’98 run and he has no tie to that at all. Good luck living up to that comparison. I think football’s dominance over BYU also has a lot to do with the perception of the coaches, as much as many try to discount the rivalry.

While we all remember the high’s of the Majerus era, it’s easy to forget how it ended in a whimper. After that ’98 run the ’99 team was surprisingly good and probably underachieved by losing in the second round with a team that most thought was at least a S16-type team.

And from ’00 until Rick left, it seemed like the team struggled with some bad luck (Johnson’s mono, Burgess’s knee), recruiting whiffs, and just a general malaise that seemed to creep its way into the program. Fans weren’t excited by just making the tourney anymore, and Majerus, for whatever reason, had lost his mojo that built us into a national contender. It was this weird Ute hoops purgatory of good but no longer great.

And yet, as dissatisfying as that little era was, we had no idea about the drop-off that was just around the corner…

Losing the national championship game broke Rick.

I think it’s important to not forget that Majerus had a crap ton of baggage. That dude was legit perverted. I know we all like to ignore that side of his story, but I am personally glad he doesn’t represent the Utes in this day and age. He would have created a major media poopstorm

thats not to say he didn’t have good qualities as well.

Little known fact, Hill had met with Rick and told him to shape up or ship out (he was STILL running illegal practices, both in length and time of year) and defying every ounce of the NCAA findings.  That was when Maji took the easy way out and left.  To say he has a ton of baggage is dead on.  Had he stayed, Utah had already recieved notice that they would be suspended and lose more scholarships.

It was a lot more than just NCAA violations with him. He would literally sit behind his desk without pants or underwear on. He would display his junk for people to see when they came into his office, he peed in potted plants in hallways, and that’s just the stuff that is pretty common knowledge.

Majerus definitely started to mail it in on the recruiting trail towards the end of his tenure. I remember the kid we signed out of Wyoming (Jake Schmidt?) that had no business being on a D1 team. Rumor was that a friend had recommended him and Rick offered him a schollie, sight unseen. Have no idea if that was true or not, but it’s as likely an explanation as any. That being said, Giacoletti took those last Majerus recruits and did make a run to the Sweet 16 thanks to Mr. Bogut.

Larry has a much easier road than Kyle. He only needs 5/6 solid guys. Plus pac basketball is far less competitive. Whitt’s issues have been building depth which takes time on a team of 85 scholarships. K had this excuse as wel his first 2/3 years and built Utah back into a sweet 16 team. But then s*** the bed for his third straight year. There is no reason they should be this bad defensively. And unlike utah football pre urban utah basketball is an historic program. K doesn’t have to make the tourney every year. But he should at least be contending every year and making it every other year or 1 out of 3 at the very least. This is the third straight year and the team is terrible. I don’t understand why he doesn’t get more blame. Whit has done great with what he’s been given.

Actually, lagging defense is what I would expect starting 3 freshmen and trying to work in a lower level Sr transfer and a JC transfer. It took Parker most of his career to be able to play defense, has taken Johnson some time as well. Next year throws in several new guys that hopefully will get minutes. But I hear you, at some point we need to have a team where most do play good defense. Along the way, we need to match the athletes others have as well. Last, we need enjoy a coach that others are trying to steal from us.

You’ve obviously never played basketball. 100x more difficult to get the players a team needs to be able to make some noise in a tourney to come to Utah. Without Nike, Jordan, or Adidas sponsoring your team your f**ked.

One major factor than most are not taking into consideration…..  The quality of the competition.  The Pac12 is a very weak basketball conference.  UCLA and Zona being the only teams not named Utah that traditionally and regulary make the tourny.  Utah should be in the top 3 every year in basketball and would’ve have been 15 years ago.

On the football side, though trending down the last two years, Pac12 football is very competitive.  Traditionally fielding 5 really good teams a year.

A second factor would be injuries.  You are a lot less likely to lose a player in Bb than in Fb.  Where Utah was when it entered the conf in depth for Fb pretty much assure late season struggles.  This year we saw that we are finally getting the depth we need to compete all season long.  In Bb, we’ve gone all year healthy and still struggled late and our depth, if anything, has become much more shallow.
