So I rewatched the Utah/BYU game from last year. Uuugggh, it was so ugly. We didn’t even get a first down until the second quarter. I think we all know that BYU owned us the first half of the game. I felt like our defense was totally confused and couldn’t stop their run game, Wilson, or Bushman. It took us almost three quarters to figure out how to stop them and that was after their starting RB got hurt.
Whats my point in all this; I think we are going to have a tough game on our hands this August. Our vaunted Defense was bitch slapped, the offense couldn’t find their asses with both hands. This year we should have the same or better D-line but beyond that we’ll be lucky to have 80% of our production for the first game. O-line is questionable with the seniors graduating. Out QB and RB haven’t played since last October. Our leading WR is questionable to start in the game. Based on what I saw from our game last year the rest of the offense is marginal at best.
I hate being debbie downer but our guys better show up or we will get worked and if that happens our season will take a lot of work to turn around.
Please talk me out of the nonsense I just spewed out. Help me find the coolaid jug!!!!

Nobody can help you at this point if you’re still being a negative nelly. There has been tons of hype and a million reasons to be drunk on kool-aid by now. National and local markets are giving Utah tons of respect.

Their starting RB that gashed gained but 3 YPC. BYU was gifted 14 points due to bad special teams play (fumbled punt and shanked punt). Zach Wilson was good, but beyond him not much. According to OnlyU we rested our starters. Our offense missed TH and Moss. Covey was beat to hell. We had nothing to play for that game.
Oline only lost 2 seniors to graduation and we have some good dudes coming in, including Bam. Dixon will shred the BYU defense. Same with Thompson and Enis. Calm down.

Those are all valid reasons, and I’d tend to agree with you . . . if it wasn’t the same thing every damn year.
We play it dangerously close to BYU every freakin year. Eek out a win. Spend the off-season listing the reasons why we are clearly better–despite the close score. Assure ourselves we’ll kick their butts next year. And then repeat the cycle.
And we’ve been doing this ritual for, what? Seven years now?
The fact that we looked like garbage for 40 minutes last year is nothing short of an abject failure on our part. There is no excuse for that crap. We knew exactly what we were getting into. We knew BYU was going to throw everything they had (what little that was) at us. And yet, once again, they make us look totally stupid for 40 minutes. It’s embarassing.

We are clearly better. We have ten years worth of data to prove that.

You are giving into the completely false BYU fan narrative that Utah always “eeks out a win.” The reality is that most of the games haven’t really been that close at all. 2016 is about the only exception in that if they had gotten the 2-point conversion, they would have won. The important thing to keep in mind is that we had 6 turnovers that game and still won! That game should have been their 54-10 and yet we still won!
The other games during the 8 game winning streak have ended with Utah taking a knee or BYU’s drive ending on their side of the field, let alone a threat to score. Last year, for example, their drive stalled on the 50 yard line on a drive where they needed a score and a 2 point conversion JUST to TIE the game and send it to OT.
Utah owns BYU, and the games haven’t been as close as BYU fans say. It’s their defense mechanism they use to try and justify their place relative to Big Brother.

You can’t be serious.
BYU has had the ball with enough time to score and either take the lead or send it to OT in every one of the last 8 games except for the 54-10 game and the Vegas Bowl. And in the Vegas Bowl we needed a very hard to come by desperation first down to run out the clock otherwise they would have had time to tie that one up as well. The games have been every bit as close as BYU fans say.

UteFanaticParticipant
You and I have had different viewing experiences, then. I define a “close” game as one where I am nervous/anxious during the final minutes of the game. The only games I had anxiety in the final few minutes were 2010, 2012, and 2016. So I guess 3 out of the last 8 have been as close as they say.
2011 – Blowout
2013 – Utah punts, up 20-13 with 0:27 remaining. BYU goes 4 and out, end of game, BYU never crosses the 50 yard line. I knew BYU was no threat to score in 0:27, their offense sucked.
2015 – BYU scores TD to bring the score to 28-35. Utah, with 3:23 remaining kills clock and takes a knee twice. BYU never even had a chance to take the lead!
2017 — BYU’s go ahead drive ends in a loss of downs on their own 15 yard line. Their offense was so pathetic I had absolutely no fear of them scoring. They didnt even get a first down on the cinal drive! Utah takes over on downs and takes a knee to end the game.
2018 – BYU does not even cross the 50 yard line on their final drive where they needed a TD and 2-point conversion just to TIE the game. I was not worried for one second on their final drive. Utah takes over at the 50 yard line and takes a knee.
So, yeah, I don’t think the above games were as close as BYU fans claim. If you listen to them you’d think every game ended like 2016 (3 yards short of winning).

Tough to play a non-conference game in-between winning the south and playing in the CCG six days later. The Y is good enough and motivated in their biggest game of the year to make a game of the week we had between those two events. And as mentioned, odd special team events like the fumble, blocked FG, and shanked punt, likely due to lack of focus. I don’t think the two teams show up with the same mentality again next month. Still, the Y will have energy due to what it means to them, now they will face a team with a full game plan.

utefansince79Participant
We destroyed them the last 20 minutes. Just have to play to our potential for 60 minutes and we should win comfortably. But if we have bad stretches, could have a tough battle on our hands.

ProudUteParticipant
I find it interesting that we attach anyone who thinks that BYU may give us a game. We have not dominated the Cougs since the 54-10 game. Yes, we have won 8 straight. However, we struggle dominating these guys. This is likely the best BYU team in years. On paper, we should win this game by about two TDs IMO. But, when was the last time we did that? Is there reason to be concerned about our first game? Absolutely and I think that anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves.

TednabParticipant
That’s funny , I was just rewatching that game the other day and thinking the same thing.. if the Utes show up like they did last year, sure they’ll be in for a long ass night.. however, too many things have changed from last years game to this .. I think we’ll definitely miss Hansen Barton, Blair , not to mention the unknowns of our special teams .. with that said , this game to me will test to see how focused the Utes are about their season ..if anything Wilson’s quote in today’s article should at least give our D some extra motivation “I mean, honestly, I look at it, and this sounds stupid to say, but I don’t think any defense should be able to stop us. BYU, as an offense, hasn’t been as great as it should have been the last couple of years.” .. Also we we’re pretty hammered last year with injuries and I thought our team showed a lot of grit and heart .. we’re battle tested this year
-
ProudUteParticipant
Gotta love that quote.

Maybe the Utes should just concede and forfeit the game. We’ve already lost according to you.

Damn, so I ask for some help in feeling better about Utah’s game against tds and I get 11 dislikes. Is this Utehub or did we get invaded by Cougarboard fever. Let me get this straight, we’re so good that we shouldn’t worry about any teams let alone the one team that has been with in a TD for the last seven of eight games? Please elaborate on how we are so great on paper and yet year after year keep this game close?
@utahfansir Not sure where you thought I said we would lose. Just having a moment that I wanted to vent with my fellow fans but get hammered cause my goggles aren’t on tight enough.
Don’t get me wrong I want to wipe the floor with cougar tails but I’m tired of the gut ache I get every time I watch those chodes in blue march down the field. Losing to them will be unbearable regardless if we win the P12S, P12C, Rose Bowl, and NC…..
-
TednabParticipant
You’re up to 12 now lol … but I actually gave you a like ; cause you bring up a lot of valid reasons. all of which play in the back of our heads when it come to the rivalry.. we all believe we should win this team by at least 2 touchdowns , but the reality is much different .. with that said Utes by 21

Here’s something that might make you feel better: I think how amped up BYU-P will be will work against them. I expect plenty of drive-killing penalties on them, especially early in the game, and maybe a targeting ejection as well.
-
Gary SappParticipant
Targeting does seem to be their favorite play when they get all amped up. Probably get a couple and Kalani will get an unsportsmanlike as a result.
