2008 National Champ replied to the topic Season Grades PFF (Utah Offense) in the forum Football 3 weeks, 6 days ago
Bernard is so low because he’s pretty much hit/miss on his carries. That ypc got inflated early in the season when he was breaking off a 50 plus every game. Now that he’s not breaking those, and not getting a ton of carries.,, he’s just not going to grade well when he doesn’t pile up a lot of “winning” runs.

OC under Meyer at Ohio State. Was reported to be a good recruiter. Would probably like a chance to rebuild his reputation for two years before getting his next HC gig

Don’t worry about us being wary or hating you outright we don’t hate anyone in the Big12 aside from BYU, who you’ll come to hate as well, ask most any fan with experience sharing a conference with them.
In terms of the online fanbase at this point it’s convenient that big 12 fans neatly separated themselves into two varieties. Those who are…[Read more]

What I’ve been saying is, we’ve won with bad QB play before as long as the RB was a future NFL guy. We’ve won with OL’s similar to this one. 6 game losing streak with a RB that is not top 200 in the country. That makes a little sense to me. Also, Utah RB’s have been very bad at pass blocking. Like grading below 30. But usually that will get put on the OL.

Utah winning is far more important to me than whether beating Iowa State lets BYU in the title game or not.

College style offense is easier to learn or just simplified?
I’d say both. Pro passing games are built around having 4 seconds for the QB to read the field. College you get 2. So the decisions have to be built into the play call and be simple enough that if a QB can deliver on time, he will be successful.
There’s a 2nd aspect that I don’t…[Read more]

We’re in a lose lose situation. Win and our rival most likely goes to the conference championship game.
Lose and we don’t make a bowl game, not as important as it once was, but I’m sure Whitt cares about that and getting anyone who wants to play more reps still helps. -

Makes me feel bad for a guy like Damien Alford. I watched him at Syracuse and he’s talented and could’ve helped us. Apparently, the offense was too much for him to grasp in his one year here. His Senior year!

Always had a soft sport in my heart for the Cyclones, playing through the years in the shadows of teams like Nebraska, Texas, Oklahoma, (not to mention Iowa). If Iowa State gets by Utah I would be pulling for them to win the conference title (kind of jumbled at the top, not sure how all the tie-breakers work as we could have a few teams with 2…[Read more]

Don’t believe what you read online about Utah fans- Most of those negative comments were from BYU trolls who were trying to poison the well so to speak. Most of us will admit, we loved the Pac 12, we were sad to see it blow up. We are grateful to be in the big 12. Most of us didn’t think we were gonna walk in and run the show. That is what the…[Read more]

The OL grade support what I have seen. Our two OTs are studs. Calhoun and Teo are studs. We need to make sure these four get taken care of in the off season. I do think that Kump and Togia are serviceable and we can build on them. If you watched the game Saturday, our pass protection was really good. NO ONE was getting open. Zero…[Read more]

Want to hear the GOAT, (or at least top 2 qb of all time) talk about this?
Basically with the portal, college football programs don’t exist anymore. They are teams.
They don’t have time to have complicated schemes and identities, because the player turnover is too frequent.
A program had an…[Read more] -

I thought Whittingham would be gone after this year if we had lived up to pre-season hype. Now that the season has gone way off the rails, I actually think he will want to come back and make some things right before he retires. Nobody knows but him, though. Maybe losing a bunch will have the opposite effect.

How hard is it to run it up the gut. Everyone in the world has it figured out. I’ve never understood the “it’s complicated” thing. From my perch the Ute’s offense looks Pop Warner simple.

I pulled up the PFF Grades and the rankings of Utah players among their position group peers. Some interesting data. I know PPF grades aren’t everything but I do think they show some trends.
Micah Bernard PFF Ranking #226 of 471 Half Backs for 2024

You hear all the time about college QBs going pro it takes time to learn the pro system and how it works. Isaac’s brother Zach commented on Ludwig’s pro style offense.College style offense is easier to learn or just simplified?

This is how every high-level offense used to be. Even for skill positions, it was very rare to see a newly drafted player in the 80’s and 90’s immediately transition to NFL success, rather, it usually took a couple of years for players to learn the system. (Also, it was fairly common for a new coach to not have their offense fully in place until…[Read more]

I hope Whitt leaves at the end of this season to start the rebuilding with Scalley! At this point with the dsyfunction in the program that he’s a liability for the team and if he still decides to coach he will run the program even further into the ground.
I’m sure lots of players ready to jump ship once the season ends. Especially on the…[Read more]
