BleedsRedUte started the topic Head coach in waiting, Scalley in the forum Football 1 month, 2 weeks ago
I don’t know what all goes on when these announcements are made, but I would think Scalley had to be part of discussions. He had to agree that he wasn’t going to look for another HC job, or even a higher paying DC job.
There had to be a time line involved, where Scalley agreed to stay on, to get the job eventually, and have a smooth transition…[Read more]

Fun to get it right for once. I never pick against the Utes, so was running out of chances, till this last game.

I think Utah has an outside shot at getting in.

You answered your own question. The “committee” is just looking for any excuse to insert Bama into the CFP. If SMU loses to Clemson, say hello to the Tide.

I think the following are locks: Oregon, Texas, Penn St, GA, ND, OSU, Tennessee, Indiana, and either ASU or ISU and with Boise or UNLV.
The only drama aside from the MWC and Big 12 is what happens if SMU loses to Clemson. Obviously, Clemson would be in.
That would leave one spot for either SMU or Ama. IMO, SMU should be a lock as they have…[Read more]

ProudUte replied to the topic In my best Jerry Seinfeld voice: What’s the deal with assistant coach Harding? in the forum Football 1 month, 2 weeks ago
IMO, it is time for him to move on. We need new blood on the offensive side of the ball. I may keep Whittingham for tight ends, but that’s it for me.
I am one who thinks that our biggest problem this season was our Oline. I honestly do not know what Cam could have done with our Oline. Sure he would have done better, but …

I think it would be on par for this season for Whit to announce he’s coming back and to announce Harding as our new OC about 4:59 PM on Friday 12/06/24.
Nothing against him, but we need some new blood at OC to charge this offense. -

If he stays, I don’t think it’s about the money. I think he is proud and a competitor and doesn’t want to go out defeated. Here’s the problem, he made his choice. He chose Rising over what was best for the program.

Only counter to that is Utah did well enough in 2023 with the same injury troubles and in my view significantly harder schedule. This season was a regression by most standards. It was the way they lost that has many people concerned. It was clearly coaching decisions and getting out coached by subjectively worst teams.

No…but yes.
If I’m Whitt and I’m owed 20 million I tell Utah to pound sand, I’m not retiring.
Now, if Utah comes to Whitt and says, “Hey. Here’s 12 million. Wanna retire?” Then the negotiation of the buyout begins.
Whitt technically “retires” but he didn’t really retire. He was asked politely (and with a big check) to retire.

Sometimes making $500,000 a year with a good routine is enough for people. And that’s great for us.
Look at the Philadelphia Eagles. They easily have the best OL coach in the NFL. Been with the Eagles for 12 years. Sometimes great money doing something you love is great.
Harding was one of our many, many OC’s. I wonder if he didn’t like it.…[Read more]

Free throws have been a bugaboo for the Smith-led Utes for the last couple of seasons. At the Arizona game last season that Utah lost in 3 OTs, the Utes shot 47 percent from the line. They shoot just 50 percent, 50 percent!!! and the game doesn’t even go into OT. There was also a close loss to ASU in that same homestand where the Utes only hit…[Read more]

The foul shooting is what kept the game close against E. Washington and it was infuriating to watch. E. Washington missed only one out of eighteen and we missed 17 foul shots. Is there no emphasis to practice foul shots, enough practiced foul shots creates muscle memory and rhythm, which creates a higher percentage. Coach Smith should have these…[Read more]

I was surprised that he only showed 1 assist in the box score, because I know he had several sharp passes. That is my one big hope for Lawson (other than making he and Ezra making their DAMN free throws) is that he will be a good passer. That is what really differentiated Bogut and one of the things that seems like it’s been lacking from our…[Read more]

Been listed as Assistant Coach/Offensive line since 2017. Has these extensive accolades on his bio including how well Booker did:
As the co-offensive coordinator with oversight of the run game in 2015, Harding was instrumental in the career of another NFL draft pick in running back Devontae Booker (2016 to Denver).
What’s his deal? Just h…[Read more]

The NCAA settlement sets maximum roster size at 105, all of which are eligible to be scholarship athletes. I believe Utah carries somewhere around 120-123 on the roster currently. That means that considering the portal players coming in, the high school players coming in, and seniors leaving, there needs to be net reduction of 15+ players to set…[Read more]

I will NEVER understand the FT struggles. It’s an unguarded shot from 15 feet. Any D1 athlete should be able to consistently make that shot at at least a 75% clip. 3 of 4 is not too much to ask and failure to at least achieve that is a failure mentally and/or a failure of accountability.
