Josh Eilert will be the interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

  • Harlan is next.

  • Smith’s original contract was for six years. That means that he had two more seasons, until 2027, after this one. I will say that it only surprises me due to the timing. Couldn’t they have done it at the end of the season? His results surely didn’t warrant an extension.

  • It’s funny. I have a gut feeling we’re gonna be a force this year. I just really like the offensive changes, with the most important that our new OC brought an experienced and incredibly dynamic QB with him. We also landed a gem at RB. I never really worry about the D with this group. Injuries will always have a big say in how the season goe…[Read more]

I wouldn’t be surprised to see the team do better immediately. If one of our assistant coaches can at least develop a substitution pattern that makes some kind of sense, we will be a better team on the road. Whoever the interim guy is, if they play Keller at all, they should be fired immediately. If we are down to 4 healthy guys plus Keller, sit…[Read more]

  • I’m pretty ambivalent about this news. Craig just did nothing for me. Didn’t love him, didn’t hate him.

    All that matters now is:
    1. Who do we get?
    2. Will some booster step up and give us some damn NIL?
    3. Will any of this make a difference, or will we still remain the same 40th-percentile team we’ve been for the last 6 coaches?

  • I believe it is the right decision. If your team is 350th in MBB in free throw shooting – you should be fired. However, I am not sure about the timing.

It is sad to me that the Ute basketball program which had so much rich history has to be rebuilt from scratch. It will not be an easy job.

  • That’s fair.

  • I do agree that not having a Cam Rising distraction will be a big plus in 2025.

  • I agree that Barton did not have a good season. I talked to his family just last week. He had never recovered from his 2023 injury and was a step slow. I hope to see the Barton from the 2023 again in 2025.

As far as the D-line is concerned – we do have Fano back and he is a stud IMO. But, we seem to lack experience in the middle. That’s…[Read more]

  • Tony, I get what you are saying. BUT, other teams lose QBs and the offense still performs. In 2023 when we lost Rising, Arizona lost Ward. They went to their backup and ended up 10-2. Preparing a backup QB is the coach’s responsibility. We have not had a good backup QB in years.

Also, we had a lot more problems than just QB in 2024 IMO.…[Read more]

  • Strange timing- I’ll wait to hear the details. Think he was making some improvement, but not enough. I guess we’ll see who is tapped as the replacement. Coach Smith seemed like a good guy, but maybe something else was going on.

  • News breaking that Coach Smith has been let go. The timing is a bit surprising but truthfully, I think that if we want to be great, this is what had to be done. I know Mark Harlan gets a lot of heat, and he deserves some of it, but I think this was a tougher decision to make financially, so I applaud him for being willing to do it. Now let’s go g…[Read more]

  • Any team (not named Ohio State, Oregon, etc.) playing QB 2 all season will lose some games. Any team playing a true freshman as QB 2 will lose more games. Any team also playing QBs 3 through 5 will lose even more.

With that, I am not convinced Utah’s football program is “in decline”. Not yet anyway given that it all points to the QB position.…[Read more]

  • I am hopeful that our football team will be better this year. If for no other reason than because Cam isn’t going to be not playing any games next season (no, I did not have a stroke, and neither did you). We won’t have the distraction of Cam’s will he/won’t he nonsense that we’ve been dealing with for the last two years. We needed to make a big…[Read more]

I’m with Tony here. Horrible luck happens. The team is positioned to be among the top teams in the Big 12 this season. I actually think the D’line could be better this season. We need to establish depth at tackle but there are three solid tackles in place. Logan Fano is a terrific anchor at one defensive end spot and there is a lot of talent vying…[Read more]

  • How do you know our D-Line and DB’s are not very good for 2025? Projecting much?

  • Any program not in the Big Ten or SEC is headed in the wrong direction. We may just be one of the many examples of that.

  • It’s hard to tell about 2025 yet proud Ute. We looked better on paper last year and lost 7 in a row. QB was the glaring weakness along with a complicated offense that nobody seemed to grasp. The new offense should be more player friendly and easier to learn.

I expect a different mindset with players and coaches. ASU and BYU have the targets on t…[Read more]

  • I think you are right – I think for better or worse we are at the mercy of Kyle’s whims on whether or not he wants to come back at the end of each and every season. With that uncertainty it will be hard for us to recruit and keep top talent.

Kyle is the main reason we have become relevant but if he stays too long he could also be part of the…[Read more]
