Yes, pleasantly surprised. YTD, the Men’s BB has overachieved a bit in B12 Hoops and in 2024 the FB team underachieved…

The current state of the basketball program doesn’t feel great and so I understand the criticisms.
That said, I agree w/ Kellso. It’s hard to be disappointed w/ a 5-6 conference record (and a win over TDS) in what is one of the best conferences in the country, if not the best, during our first year transitioning in and after we lost our two best…[Read more]

Amazing stat NarfUte. You would not expect that from a team that lacks talent. Anyone can shoot and make a free throw. FT % should be a strength not a weakness.

There are 355 NCAA collegiate men’s basketball teams. Utah is ranked #352 in FT %. With that, i’m surprised they’ve won any games.

A very respectable result came early in the year against Mississippi State (on a “neutral court” in the same state). Kept it close the whole way against a team projected (last I checked) as a 7 seed in the Big Dance.

This team has over achieved with the talent level and so many new players. Problem is our high water mark won’t get us a trip to the dance.

I don’t think Smith is capable of recruiting Big12 talent Miami. He is coaching Mountain West caliber players. Other than Carlsen (coach K recruit) I can’t think of any NBA talent on roster in 4 years.
It will take a Dion type hire with deeper NIL pockets to turn things around. If we want to compete in the Big 12 and sell tickets it’s going…[Read more]

Agreed. Growing up in P12 country surely skews my bias towards the P12 teams. UCLA game is the only Utah game I am attending this coming season. Outside of Utah games, way more viewing interest in the old P12 teams play vs. the non-Utah Big 12 games. Some of the MWC games, USU, BSU games are more interesting. No disdain for the B12, it’s more a…[Read more]

I’m very happy we beat TD$$$$ who has a few players making more than some of the ones playing down at the Delta Center.

Not to me. last year we had two players who were better than any player we have this year–Carlson and D. Smith.

I hadnt thought about this until just now, but the fact that that athletic dept. just announced a $17 million deficit due to Pac 12 Comcast settlement and the lesser revenue in the Big Xii may be a big factor.

My son’s experience echoed this as well. The kid he kept losing his minutes to was 6’8 and started playing late. My son was only 6’4 but twice as thick and had been playing post with this group of kids since they were in 3rd grade (going largely undefeated in school and traveling ball for years). The coach, who was new to town, seemed hell bent…[Read more]

Trust me, we do not want Pitino, he kind of seems like a neppo baby to me. I saw no evidence that he was much of a coach/leader at Minnesota.

The next coach will be someone with ties to the program.
It has to happen. It will energize the fan base but most importantly will energize the NiL donors

I feel like Utah started winning more when Sharamjavits went to the PG. He might not be uber productive on the offensive end, but defensively, a 6’8″ Point Guard adds an annoyance to the defense.

How about that Dylan Guenther? GW goals in back-to-back nights!!! This time with 33 seconds left in OT. So glad that the UHC locked him up to a long-term contract before the season started.

Here is a good way of looking at where we actually rank
It’s generally hard to measure a recruiting class – 247 has their rankings, but frankly put way too much emphasis on class size – especially in a transfer portal era where its not always helpful to fill more spots. And looking at average recruit rating is an improvement over that… but can…[Read more]

With or without Smith? Personally, and I’ve said a few times, I don’t see a realistic pathway for Utah to get rid of Smith after this season. I just think that there’s a kind of “buyout fatigue” and the university will probably just rather see him run out his contract instead of paying to go away. Now, the only way that changes is if Smith…[Read more]
