You make some good thought provoking points. But don’t underestimate what a great football program does for the perception of a University. The University of Utah has benefitted massively from being great at football and being in the Pac-12. An interesting read is looking into how Alabama’s recent run of football dominance completely changed the…[Read more]

AlohaUte replied to the topic What happens to Players who go to the Portal, but get no offers? in the forum Football 1 month, 1 week ago
A lot drop down levels, like go D2 or NAIA. I was talking to a baseball coach at a local D2 school, he said one thing that sucks for new high school graduate is there are so many fewer opportunities to get on a team in college because the transfer portal allows them to get players from D1 who are more ready now. I assume it’s the same for football.

The IRS is already lining up for this. I also expect a huge chunk of money to suddenly dry up when the “donations” are no longer considered a charitable. NIL collectives are already considered for-profit by the IRS. It just takes time for all of that to flow through.

The University has a Technology Licensing Office. When a professor/researcher invents something new they are encourage d to submit an invention disclosure. Patents are filed and in some cases companies are formed. When the technology is licensed the inventor gets a generous cut along with their department. If a professor is really generating…[Read more]

Sports is a loss-leader for the vast majority of universities. That leads me to conclude that if the courts force universities to compensate athletes as employees, then most universities will take the path of least resistance and drop sports in general. Most will drop sports because it won’t be affordable but others, like…[Read more]

Looking at how NIL is really now rapidly morphing from Chaos money flood, to possible contract, to potential university employment I started wondering.
For most universities, massively more money comes into the university from research and patents. So if I have a promising group of athletes and bringing 30 of them costs me 20-30m and the profit…[Read more]

The problem with comparing college athletes with salaried employees of any industry, is that no one pays money to watch the salaried employees go about their business. Athletes are more akin to entertainers (singers, actors, comedians, etc..) in that their value is completely based on the number of eyeballs that they bring in. Just look at all…[Read more]

I would agree with all that, especially the IRS part. You have to believe that somewhere soon down the line, the IRS will take an interest in all of these “kids” making hundreds of thousands of dollars. How much do you want to make a bet that quite a few of these guys, a lot of which have probably never had a job except for sports in their…[Read more]

Very true, but I believe there are some good wins in their that can still contribute.

Tanuvasa, is probably the worse, but we have other players that will step up and replace him!
The other two have never played a down of football for Utah, so we really won’t know if it will be impacting or not. We have other players that can contribute, and if Singer comes back, it will be a plus!

After a red hot portal grab last week, we had had three massive disappointments in the last 24 hours.
1. Tanuvasa entering the portal
2. Joe Williams flip to CU
3. Hunter Clegg flip to BYUKeanu is by far the biggest loss and I would rank the three in this order.
Can’t imagine how frustrating this is for coaches who invest so much in…[Read more] -

I’m a bit late to this post, but I think you’ll have to come down on your pricing a bit to get people to watch this team.

I am pretty sure he will end up at USC. They just lost Bear Alexander to Oregon and have a huge hole to fill and a lot more cash than we have. My question is what is Tanuvasa going to do at another school where they need to compensate him for the use of his name, image, or likeness? What is he going to be doing to earn the money? NIL has…[Read more]

I’m sorry, but if I make a commitment to a company and then another comes along and offers me more, I DO NOT chase the money, especially if I publicly announce I am committed to the current company. This is a total lack of integrity. I hope these kids read this HUB and see what the fans think of their so-called commitment.
