2008 National Champ replied to the topic Rose to UMASS in the forum Football 1 week ago
Moving to the MAC next year. Don’t know if that will be an easier schedule than they’ve had as an Independent.
If healthy by next fall camp, Rose should have a pretty good chance at QB1. I don’t know what the expected recovery is for Lisfranc since I believe it’s dependent on which or how many of the bones were broken. Barton was able to…[Read more]

The long range plan/hope is to build a smaller arena downtown that seats 10-12,000. Huntsman too and expensive to renovate and the U wants the land for other uses, likely housing.

It’s always “no good recruit wants to play here because nobody comes to the games, and nobody comes to the games because they aren’t any good…” I’d like to see them try more to get people there . Like what about two free season tickets to football season ticket holders? Or some variation of that. Do something to get people in there.

Isn’t UMASS one of the worst teams in the FBS?

Recruit some athletes and develop them. Height means nothing if you’re not athletic. Big 12 is athletic and physical. Hard to score against those teams. Our ski team isn’t going to cut it.

Rick, thanks for the analysis and insights. Any sports fan could have put two and two together when that hire was consummated so quickly. Too bad about Randy Bennett because that guy’s been a winner at Saint Mary’s forever. He was actually near the top of my list as far as candidates go, with number 1 being the impossible dream of Mark Few

I can provide a little more context. The Smith hire was basically a done deal when Harlan fired Coach K. All had been done behind the scenes. When the firing was announced, three coaches reached out expressing interest through agents or other connections to Utah athletics – Alex Jensen, Porter Moser and Randy Bennett. Harlan had no interest in any…[Read more]

No offense, but I disagree with almost all of this. From my perspective….
1-Utah sports are doing good (except for the two biggies), but how much of that was him? Gymnastic almost tanked, but under the threats of lawsuits, he finally took action. Men’s baseball has tanked under him. Women’s BBGym was already at the top of their game. He…[Read more]

That place is as loud, as rocking and as lively as they come. It’s the losing that hurts.

It’s simply bad basketball.
Now, don’t get me wrong, this is not a talented basketball team, but some teams overachieve with a weaker roster by playing sound, fundamental basketball. Smith’s teams do just the opposite. They play at their level or below.
Why? Because they don’t do basketball well. The stats show it. Over the last 3 games…[Read more]

The HC can’t be saved. At some point it will be razed and replaced in a different location on campus. It will also be a smaller venue.
In terms of support, the student population at Utah is an embarrassment. We have 27,000 undergraduate students and about 30 show up for our first conference game against a pretty good opponent. Even t…[Read more]

Yeah, me too. I have season tickets and have been to every home game this season. Unfortunately, I see no other way ahead than firing Smith and starting from scratch. Smith’s current tenure is very reminiscent of Krystkowiak’s last couple of seasons though I will say that those teams were much better in terms of actual players. I mean, Coach…[Read more]

I’m not sure I follow your logic. Larry Krystowiak was fired on 16 March 2021, almost immediately after the Utes were eliminated from the PAC tournament by USC on 11 March 2021 and well, well before most teams in need of a HC had even started a search for a replacement. At the time of his dismissal, Krystkowiak was the highest paid coach in the…[Read more]

The Huntsman is fine. The place was like a volcano when BYU showed up last season. The problem is the program’s mediocrity over an extended period of time. I can guarantee you that if we had teams of the same quality as when Majerus was in town, then the arena would be full almost every night. At this stage in American society, you can’t…[Read more]

Need a team that performs well to draw a crowd and need a good crowd to motivate current players to play well and encourage recruits and potential coaches to come (as well as encouraging NIL $$$$).
Right now team performing poorly, small crowds, virtually zero student support, and limited NIL funds. I fear the decline will continue for some time.

So Harlan is a boss with no power and you think that is a good thing? Or that he has zero responsibility?

AlohaUte replied to the topic Smith Post Game Interviews and Thougths in the forum Basketball (Men) 1 week ago
It’s tough, because it seems in all three of the last big losses, the team kept it competitive for a half. So I can see where he’s coming from with some of the positivity comments. But the team simply isn’t good enough to compete in the Big-12 or even the Pac-12. He’s not able to attract the talent necessary. It’s likely both him not having the…[Read more]

Made a big difference when sections A-F (and AA-FF) were the student sections, filled below the concourse for most games, and packed to the top for BYU, UTEP, Wyoming, New Mexico, and others. Compared to now where the band often has more members than the rest of the students.
