In the womens game yesterday, UCF went like 11/12 and Utah went 15/18, but 2 of those 3 misses was by Nene Sow who played a total of maybe 3 or 4 minutes. Without her, they went 13/14. Now they get the advantage of a smaller ball but still — at one point during the mens Colorado game, Utah was 1/9. That’s 12.5 percent from the line. I know it…[Read more]

That is no excuse. If you don’t have the talent, then you take your 5-6 most productive guys and they all get the majority of the minutes and you take your next 2-3 most productive and use then as needed. The problem with using talent as an excuse for the merry go round is that your 5-6 best players need as many minutes at live game speed to…[Read more]

Minnesota Ute replied to the topic Bartle latest to criticize Craig Smith’s sub patterns in the forum Basketball (Men) 4 weeks, 1 day ago
It is not comforting to hear everyone finally coming around to what I’ve been saying for weeks if not a month, but at least the ones making excuses for Smith and saying Keanu lacks consistency will disappear. He has been nothing but consistent, but as I said again on late last week, there is something Craig “doesn’t like” about Keanu, because…[Read more]

Substitution Patterns and Lineup Uncertainty
“Perhaps the most maddening aspect of the inconsistency theme is the substitution patterns, which have been discussed for much of the season. The rotations appear to lack continuity, with players often not knowing when or how long they will be on the floor.
This uncertainty can lead to lapses in f…[Read more]

I’m an Indiana Pacers fan for some reason (Reggie and Rik in NBA Jam were a great duo). I just looked at their box score. They are getting their butts kicked by the Lebron/Luka-less lakers.
Why do I bring this up as a Ute basketball post? Because the Pacers are currently 30/31 AS A TEAM from the free throw line.
SMH, do better Utes. You can do…[Read more]

I don’t think Dawes would get off the bench for a Majerus team. Too many times not boxing out.

This is probably more of a function of having a whole bunch of stiffs on the team as anything else. There’s not a single guy on the team whose play screams “I have to be out there if we’re going to be successful.” That means every minute is up for grabs for any player.
This, of course, goes back to our dismal recruiting. And that, of course, goes…[Read more]

Sorry I was responding to the inconsistent lineups. Guards have always been crucial (especially point guard) to success in college. Not having a point guard is contributing to the inconsistent lineups. Hard to believe Smith hasn’t had a true point guard in 4 years.

It’s not surprising and I think that’s b/c of what we have on the roster: too many decent or good players but no great players. And it doesn’t feel like anybody on the roster has really separated themselves from the pack to clearly claim the consistent lions share of the minutes. On a given night, Ausar has a great game and then he follows it up…[Read more]

What are you talking about? Smith had Brandon Carlson for the first 3 years here and did nothing. Brandon plays for the OKC Thunder. Smith’s biggest issue as I see it is he has had horrible guards his entire time here. Davon was probably the best but he left us after playing half a season and even he had some serious flaws.
The college is,…[Read more]

Good stuff. What is Dawes’ deviation.
My assumption is he has the most whiplash of any Utah player, 20 minutes one night, 2 the next.

Hey Eagle, actually I don’t mind taking the trip up to Laramie. I’ve always wanted to see a game there and this contest gives me the perfect opportunity. I’ve already made reservations and, boy, am I glad I could use hotel points to do so. I don’t know if anyone has checked but hotel prices in Laramie make what the Grand America charges in SLC…[Read more]

Rick and Emerson I also think a consistent point guard playing big minutes would create more stability and define roles better. Seems like Smith’s rotations are based on who won’t turn the ball over and that varies depending on how good the other teams defense.
