Hamburger-Gravy replied to the topic 1944 Utah National Championship Basketball Team in the forum Basketball (Men) 1 month ago
Regarding the selection process, I read somewhere that the NCAA only fielded 8 teams in the early days–they tried to get the best team they could from 8 different regions of the country.
The NIT field was a bit larger, and they just tried to invite the best teams regardless of location.
If no PCC teams played in the 1944 post-season, it…[Read more]

The NIT started in 1938 and the NCAA started in 1939. From what I’ve read, the first few years the NIT was definitely preferred, as there was more money involved and they played at Madison Square Garden.
The NCAA caught up a bit money-wise and started also playing at MSG in 1943. I’ve seen different arguments about the tourneys’ prestige levels…[Read more]

The NIT was a more prestigious tournament than the NCAA back in the 40’s.

Yes, there’s a big disconnect between the rankings at ESPN and those at 24/7. For example, 24/7 has Miami at #4 while ESPN has them down at #13. 24/7 has Clemson at #11 and ESPN has them at #37. Ranking inflation? I don’t know.

ESPN puts Utah as #33 in the nation.
In the Big XII, only TCU and KSU had higher-rated recruiting classes. Colorado is rated #34 or just right behind Utah.
Here’s the write-up:
33. Utah Utes
ESPN 300 commits: 0
Top offensive prospect: QB Wyatt Becker
Top defensive prospect: LB Christian ThatcherRanking entering Wednesday: 33

You are correct! I heard a podcaster say that one of the adjustments for this team is that they aren’t used to playing in front of so many fans and aren’t used to having so much of the local media around during media sessions. In AZ, ASU’s hockey team got more fans in their shared 5,000 seat arena and the local media didn’t cover them as much. It…[Read more]

Just a huge meh.
More excited about a probably mediocre UCLA than the rest of the schedule.
Can’t hate the relegation conference enough.

Yeah, that was me with that comment. When I hear “Outlaws” I get a Bad News Bears vibe with whatever all that entails.

Honestly, if this team could just play .500 at home they’d have a good shot at the playoffs. Last I checked, the Jazz and the UHC had the worst home records in the NBA and NHL.

Someone mentioned the Outlaws would be perfect if it were for a 14u baseball team. My kid once played for the Bandits, and the older team were the Outlaws. Blech. No thanks. Huge fan of the colors for the UHC but please stay away from the cartoonish Yeti. The oval logo is fine. If we’re going with the Mammoth it would look much better in…[Read more]

I’m perfectly fine with both Mammoth and Outlaws. I don’t like HC.
As for color scheme, they should alter slightly. The current scheme is perfect for Mammoth, IMO, but I’d alter it a bit – like add some brown or copper color into it. If they go with Outlaws and want to keep the sky blue and black, they definitely need to add brown or copper or…[Read more]

Definitely one of the funnest games I’ve been to this season. And what a way for Dylan Guenther to come back from injury. getting the tying and game winning goals.

Dramatic ending last night against the Flyers. Utah ended a long losing streak with an OT goal with a fraction of a second left on the clock.

I dove down the rabbit hole of looking up NCAA Champions and realized I had never looked into the 1944 Utah team. Pretty interesting. It was a completely different world. Here’s the wiki page for that team: Utah 1944 Wiki
The schedule was nuts. They basically played a bunch of military teams, played Dow Chemical, etc. No BYU, no Utah State…[Read more]
