I’ve talked about this with my best friend, who went to Cal and his wife Stanford. Both institutions could be monsters with alumni, but they struggle with understanding the ROI. Other than just wanting to see your team win, you get nothing in return from an individual standpoint. At some point, like you said, it’s just too much money to give away…[Read more]

I believe for BYU donors, this is the equivalent of a shiny new toy. They are in the Big 12, they are allowed to openly fork over money indiscriminately to buy players, and it is a fun thing to do right now. I personally think a lot of this is pent-up emotion from having watched Utah’s success in the PAC12. They want that for BYU and they are…[Read more]

Signs a new 4-year, 104 million dollar deal, total career earnings through the end of the contract is just north of 200 million. Awesome stuff for him and his family.

The majority of the NIL money coming into BYU is coming from a single person. I am friends with this person but I cannot say who it is. It is not Ryan Smith. Although this person has the means to make these payments, knowing this person, I doubt they will want to continue doing this year after year. This is the reality of NIL. You can buy a…[Read more]

to go in the first round of the 2026 NFL draft.
They are projected to go 10 and 12 in next year’s draft. I cannot remember having two Utes taken in the first round in the same year.
This says a lot about the potential of our offensive line. According to many talking heads we have two of the best tackles in all f college football. Our three…[Read more]

We have a strong O-Line behind what should be one of the best rushing attacks in the conference. Reminder that we play in a conference that does not care about defense. Many (myself included) thought our defense was noticeably worse last year and we were still #1 or 2 in the conference. We were in a ton of games despite abysmal offensive…[Read more]

I am optimistic. Consider:
-Injuries have been a big issue for us, and not only at QB. Our schedule could not be better suited to overcoming the injury bug. Only 3 big road trips (West Virginia, Kansas, Baylor), well-spaced byes, and a 6-week stretch without leaving northern Utah (bye, ASU, @byu, Colorado, Cincinnati, bye).
-We get most of our…[Read more] -

Not failing, utah is above average NIL-wise. We are leaving a system where player development mattered and we excelled at it, and entering a system where all that matters is money. It isn’t a coincidence that schools like IU, which have tons of money but a historically terrible football program, are suddenly able to compete at the highest levels.…[Read more]

There’s a narrative from Twitter byu fans, woe-is-me Utah fans, and fake journalists that Utah is broke. I do not think that is true, and it will become even less true as revenue sharing becomes the primary player compensation.
Level-headed summary of the offseason:
-Lost two definite starters: Tanuvasa and Williams. Obviously not good, but we d…[Read more] -

Utah is not poor.
There are middle to upper middle class. Plus they don’t flaunt it.
They are not overpaying like BYU to get players. BYU will not get the return on investment.Utah puts value limits on certain players and positions.
They also don’t play “the game.” An example are the Pula twins. They want to be Utes but their agent/h…[Read more]

We know the strength of our recruiting classes based on the same indicators as before. Anyone can draw their own conclusions as to whether we’re recruiting better than almost all former pac12 programs based on different rankings. What do those rankings tell you?

The only thing I’ve heard is that the coaches have placed a value on position groups, and the NIL people basically stick to what the coaches are saying we should spend for those position groups based on needs. I’m guessing they make exceptions for higher level players if/when they can. But, I’m not an insider so what do I know?

Victim didn’t withdraw, there was a joint agreement for dismissal. Likely there’s been a settlement between them.

This year is the chance for Whittingham to declare emphatically that the last 36 months or so have been noise, purely an unfortunate series of consecutive and often coincident insults that have compounded to derail a formerly impressive program.
Given that he had every opportunity (over a period of several years) to have a backup quarterback, a…[Read more]

This coaching/conditioning staff needs to prove they can get a QB through the season uninjured. My biggest fear is we’ll have a strong early showing that is extinguished by a QB injury.

The victim withdrawing the case is an entirely separate can of worms that I’m not going to touch. That said, it is so on-brand for BYU that he is still transferring because even without a formal charge or legal case, he was suspended due to honor code violations.
I don’t think he’s anything special at QB but I think they’d have benefited from…[Read more]

I expect them to have a good year, but, like the last two years, it depends on injuries. People forget that we were doing just fine until Baylor got away with one of the latest hits I’ve ever seen.
Awful injury luck across the entire team has derailed our last two seasons.
We will be fine as long as that doesn’t happen again.

The TSPP fan reactions to him being gone are pretty funny. When news first came out about the incident, there were two main responses. Either he didn’t do it/won’t get suspended, Or, OMG WE ARE SCREWED.

What worries me the most about our passing game isn’t the lack of experience at WR. It’s the experience our presumed starter has at throwing INTs.
I watched our Spring game on ESPN+, and thought that Dampier was just “pretty good”. He wasn’t “great”. And nobody behind him looked capable of leading us to Arlington in December.
Travis Wilson…[Read more]
