I still see Kyle retiring around age 60-62 (2019-2021).  Perhaps he will stick around until the end of his contract (2023?).  He has said one of his own personal tragedies was seeing his father die so young, and that he wanted to spend some time enjoying life after football.

FTR, Fred ‘Mad Dog’ Whittingham was 64 when he died during the 2003 season.

Outside perspective from UW on Utah

Comments: Utah had a crazy season in 2017. They pulled off just three wins in conference play. However, four of their six losses were all within a single possession. They are also the only team in the conference to have won a postseason game.

The Utes project as a more balanced team in 2018. They have most of their key offensive pieces coming back including Huntley, Moss and WR Raelon Singleton. The offensive line looks fairly well set. They are, however, going to have to do some defensive rebuilding. Anae, Barton, DB Julian Blackmon and DL Leki Fotu look like the key building blocks.

UW fans are spread all across the board on Utah. While there is a clear convergence around 2nd and 3rd place predictions, nearly 13% of respondents thought that Kyle Whittingham has what it takes to lead the Utes to a division title in 2018. We shall see.

Agreed Whitt should retire in 2020 or 2021 most likely you look for his replacement after we see what he does with this talent for two years.

Troy Taylor the jury is out for me on that one. I question him wanting to run Huntley so much and I agree Huntley pulled too many. But he had Moss all along just sitting behind Huntley. Utah could have controlled the tempo a little more and what I saw against Colorado is what I want. But it is hard to make that the measuring stick because no one wanted to tackle Moss all game. I am still mixed bag on TT. Obviously this was always a mulligan year for him Harding will be gone soon with a job offer so it is all on him 2018. He has to coach Huntley up in reading the defense. He has to make Huntley realize Shyne and Moss are the backs to take contact and can make plays. Throwing into the blitz more and recognizing it when he sees it. Sophomore mistakes and all coachable but it never seemed like Huntley progressed to me.  He was always great and the playcalling was just catching up to him.

2018 and 2019 are going to be special for sure.

Or if you really want to make it Spiral change organizations. Whitt is part of the Utah brand at this point. Retiring is the only option for it right now and that won’t happen until 2021 or so.

Why not? We all know Utah has always been GA’s dream job. If he does well, he’ll be next in line for HC when KW retires in 2021

    UTE98:

Though I have been critical of Whittingham, I haven’t called for his job. His contract expires in 2021, if Utah hasn’t won at least one Pac-South title (outright), it’s time to part ways. Four years (’18-’21) is ample time to get the job done. I’ve always been in Whittingham’s corner, but getting dump-trucked @ RES by ASU last week raised some serious doubts in my mind. That was essentially a 30-3 loss. That’s just not acceptable. I always hear about Whittingham finding ‘diamonds in the rough’ and that’s true on defense but not at the QB or WR positions. Same results, new year.

Whitt will retire at the end of his contract anyhow. That is after 2021. That is sooner than we realize, and we will have a complete new set of problems/strengths with the new coach.
