UCF is going to run all day and if they can get Scalley to abandon the middle like he’s been doing lately, they’ll break a couple of big runs. It could get 2021 Utah v Stanford bad where the Utes piled up 400 yards on the ground.

    Topic: 5th String QB

How often do you hear about a team starting their 5th string quarterback? It’s one of the rarest things in football, and yet, here we are. As a Utah fan, I’m still wrapping my head around the fact that we had to do this last year (2023) and might have to do it again this season. It’s honestly kind of wild and also super frustrating to see how fast we go through quarterbacks.

Utah’s quarterback injury history over the last decade feels like a curse:
    • 2014: Travis Wilson goes down, and we end up playing Kendal Thompson.
    • 2018: Tyler Huntley gets hurt late, and Jason Shelley has to step in for critical games.
    • 2021: Charlie Brewer starts, quits the team, and Cam Rising fights through early injuries to eventually take over.
    • 2022: Rising plays hurt most of the year and tears his ACL in the Rose Bowl.
    • 2023: Rising is out all year recovering from that ACL, and we shuffle through Nate Johnson, Bryson Barnes, and even walk-ons.

Now, 2024 is looking like déjà vu. It’s honestly disturbing how fast we seem to burn through quarterbacks. Is it bad luck? Depth issues? Scheme? I don’t know, but it’s brutal to watch.

Have any other teams had to start a 5th string QB in college football? I know it’s incredibly rare, but I’d love to hear about it if you’ve got examples. Let’s commiserate.

Good one NC. Yeah, a lot of coach speak in yesterday’s routine, obligatory Q&A with the restrained local media. Not much talk about the next game. Have to think Friday’s game has the tone of a back yard Turkey bowl. Hope all the players on both sides have fun. BS KW’s decision is determined solely by doing what’s best for the team. A piece of the decision, sure. Bottom line, KW leveraged the BYU job, Tennessee job and 2021 success to up his contract pay at Utah. KW’s going to do what is best for KW and his family, as he should. As mentioned in this thread, KW’s in the early years of his big pay day contract leaving a ton of cash on the table if he steps away as HC. A couple bad seasons far defines his time at Utah. Dude’s had a fantastic career able to live near his family in a great place. Go Utes!

Whitt’s best year was his fourth year. Every year after that, he has had major coaching issues that have screwed over Utah.

2008: Almost lost to New Mexico. Should have lost to TCU.
2011: Can’t beat Colorado to go to the PAC-12 title game.
2019: Got blown out by Oregon when a win puts him in the playoffs.
2021: Went with Brewer over Rising. Lost to BYU and SDSU. We should have been in the playoffs that year.
2022: Lost to a bad, bad, bad Florida team. Got blown out by UCLA and Penn St.

Even in Whitt’s best years, he shot himself in the foot over and over again. In 20 years, he has had one great year (16 years ago). Four very good years. No playoff appearances, when he had two GREAT shots at the playoffs.

He has made bad decision after bad decision at the most important position on the field.

I dunno. You take off the red glasses and really evaluate him…He’s really good.

He’s not great. His average record is 8-5.

    Ugh. Honestly? Probably neither.

On the one hand, you have a guy who has been here a long time, but peaked in 2021 and has been getting worse ever since. Hell, even 2021 started off as a complete s**t show as he started Brewer or Bentley over Rising and it wasn’t until we lost to BYU and SDSU that Whitt pulled his head out of his ass and started Rising.

We should have been a playoff team in 2021.

In 2022, it was pure luck we made it to the PAC-12 title game.

    2023 was a s**t show.

    2024 is a s**t show.

Even Whitt’s two best years, he made HUGE blunders that cost him playoff spots.

Then we have Scalley. Whitt’s right hand man. No experience as HC. No experience outside of the program or Whitt.

    I dunno.

A team like Utah…If you asked 100 people what Utah should do, removing names from the options, most would choose option 3:

Open the spot up to a nationwide search. Utah would be a top3/top 5 program. We’d have our pick of coaches. Hell, I’d even bet Chris Petersen would listen to an offer from us.

Good stuff. It’s pretty hard to ignore 2019, 2021 & 2022 though which were the 3 best QB years of his tenure and also the 3 best running. So when Utah finally got complimentary football between run/pass and offense/defense, great things happened.

2008 was good but not outside the range of it’s surrounding years.

One of my biggest frustrations this year is Whitt forgot what gets his desired results.

TOP – need a great running game.
Tire out the opposing defense – need a good running game.
Long sustained drives – need a good running game.
Score TDs – need a good running game.

So let’s looks at a few stats over the years.

I believe Whitt got allured to the shiny QB NIL money and went after the shiny object. Whitt is about the RB, to set up a game manager to win. We missed on a few RBs this year in the portal, and if we’d spent the money there, or better yet kept JJ we are playing in the Big XII championship game in spite of being on our fiftieth QB for the season.

2021: it would be between #11 Utah and #12 Pitt for the 5th conference autobid. Does the committee still jump 10-3 Utah 6 spots for beating Oregon in the CCG and rank higher than 11-2 Pitt? Bama, Michigan, Cincy & Baylor get the byes.

2022: it would be between #8 Utah and #9 K State for the last bye. Does the committee jump 10-3 Utah 3 spots and ahead of K State even though the TCU win > SC win? Either way, Utah gets one of the 5 autobids. Georgia, Michigan, Clemson get top 3 seeds.

Winning the conference those years was great but those were still 3 loss seasons which provides no guarantee of making the playoff. And does 2021 Utah get dinged for losing to two G5’s, even if they both ended up ranked?

We have one sole contestant in first place this week, thankfully. Now I don’t have to flip a coin or figure out some way to break the tie.  Congrats to “The Gooman” for going 9-3.  For the effort, The Gooman collects a $25 Amazon gift card!
