Jim VanderhoofParticipantThere is still a few players off the 2021 loss. There is plenty of motivation. Question is can we score more than 14 pts. Bring in Alex Smith for a day as the “QB whisperer”

lgt4141ParticipantI was one of the fans who wanted Barnes gone. At the time I think many of us, me included, assumed Rising would come back at full strength and do what he did in 2021 and 2022. How many Ute fans didn’t drink that kool-aid?

Ute DubParticipantLudwig had a top 2 conference running back every year except this year, where Utah is 10th. Utah was top 2 in 2018 to 2022, not including 2021. Fell to 3rd in 2023. We just don’t have the dudes to run the rock. Granted, Ludwig wasn’t with Utah in 2018, but he was with Vanderbilt and Vanderbilt led the SEC in rushing.

2008 National ChampParticipantScalley can’t fix the O in season any more than Bajakian can. At this point, you’re just hoping for lightning in a bottle which perhaps Whitt could provide if he announced he was stepping down after the season. Maybe the kids can come together trying to send him out in style.
And the next 2 weeks should be the first open QB competition since 2021. No preconceived notions, just line them up and see who actually is most game ready.

2008 National ChampParticipantYou hadn’t heard that? It’s been one of the most repeated stories from 2021. That on that 4th down call, Ludwig sent in a play but when the team came out in the wrong formation, Whitt called for timeout. When they asked what play Rising thought was called he said flea-flicker. The coaches looked at each other and decided that would be a great call so they went back on the field and ran it.

Rick WalkerParticipantIdk about anyone else but I’ve always had fun with a win no matter how it happened. Maybe that’s just me but the 2019, 2021, and 2022 seasons were all super enjoyable for me for the games we won. Heck I even could enjoy the wins last year to some extent because I personally never thought it was possible for Cam to recover in less than a year so I fully expected a full year of Bryson.

RickParticipantBut when Singer is open it is not by much. I have never seen him clearly beat his man in any significant way. Almost all of his catches are contended that I have seen. Of course, I am not counting anything from the SUU game here. I do agree with game speed over top end speed but we lack that as well. So let’s look at some of our guys over the years. Does this team have a Covey? No. A Jeremy Brooks? No. We clearly do not have a return talent of the likes of Smithson, Dunn, Clay, etc. If I look at our top 10 all time receiving list, there is not a single WR on it in this decade except Covey and he played from 2015-2021 to get to 7th all time. The only other player is Kuithe and he is a TE and has played from 2018-2024. Is it our offensive scheme that does not attract speed players, probably quite a bit. We cannot fix that without a change in OC IMO even though I love much of the work Andy has done. But we are a much slower team on the outside today than we have been in earlier years. We have to fix that or it will be our death in this conference. If it is our scheme and the fact that our competitors know our playbook better than we do then we probably did a good thing by changing OC. I’m just hoping it improves our recruiting because if we don’t change our speed on the field, I don’t see us having a lot of success going forward.

KellsoParticipantNo, but it’s a start. When Lud was here in 2005-2008, it was more of the same. Predictable play calling. When he came back in 2019, he had Huntley who was able to audible and had experience. In 2020 COVID. The start on the 2021 season he started a QB that couldn’t lead a team. Finally Cam got the nod during the 3 OT game vs San Diego State. We are all ready for the change. The players have a massive amount of heart and the talent is definitely there. This could happen quickly too.

EagleMountainUteParticipantI am hearing rumors that the bald guy. The QB analysis guy Mike Bajakan is taking over as OC.
I looked up Northwestern stats for when he was the play caller 2020-2023:
Northwestern averaged 23 ish PPG in 2020, 16ish in 2021, 13.8 in 2022 and 22.1 in 2023
