ParticipantReally great insight! Thank you so much! I absolutely trust the process here at the U with slow, sustainable progress in the right direction that compounds on itself over time. I just hate to see quality players slip through our fingers (Jayden Daniels and Daniel Ngata have been the most painful to me).
As a side note, is it too much to ask what happened to these two? I am (obviously) out of the loop on most recruiting situations and only see the results. Losing both to the other TDS was painful.

ParticipantSo how do the coaches land the 4/5 star guys? What changes to encourage these guys to pick Utah?
Especially the instate guys: Jay Tufele, Puka, the Sewell brothers (those two should be Utes – why didn’t the coaches seal the deal when Nephi was a senior in HS? That one still stings).
The out of state players are more difficult, but the defensive guys who should naturally be inclined to pay for a perenial top 15 defense.
I think of Eno Benjamin, Jayden Daniels, Talanoa Hufanga, etc – they all seemed on the brink of coming to Utah – how can the coaches close the deal?
I thought Jack Tuttle would be a huge difference maker by the way he recruited and used social media – maybe more recruit involvment?
Fans can’t recruit per the NCAA, and technically aren’t even allowed to respond to twitter posts, but perhaps mass likes and retweets? An inundation of free/inexpensive Ute gear to the Utah highschools? Plaster “Family on 3” and “SafetyPride” everywhere?

ParticipantUtah has only 5 commits according to 247Sports. That sports website now shows Katravis Marsh as a decommit as of yesterday. I have no idea who is really on Utah’s radar screen, with mutual interest. A friend of mine suggested that Utah may have “silent” commits, in an effort to prevent what occurred last year with ASU coach Herm Edwards and Utah commit QB Jayden Daniels. While I have no proof of this, over the last few years, other programs appear to have been poaching Utah commits, knowing that Utah’s staff does a remarkable job of scouting under-rated talent.

ParticipantI understand we have a few recruits coming this weekend. I just read that an athlete/wide receiver is coming that just decommitted from AZ State today.
Does anyone know the name or what happened to the 6’8″ WR, #1 target for Jayden Daniels while in high school? Utah ws is #1 choice but he didn’t sign.

ParticipantI’d give the UCLA offense a little bit more credit than ASU’s. UCLA’s offensive line is much better than ASU’s, and DTR is playing better football than Jayden Daniels was. I still think that we win comfortably, but I don’t expect to hold them to 3 points.

ParticipantUtah recruits the ESPN Top 300. I looked the other day at all of the unsigned kids in the Top 300. With a few exceptions, Utah has offered all of them. That is particularly true for any recruit in the Pac-12 footprint. It includes Texas and Florida, and states adjacent. Utah’s recruiting tapers off in the NE, but a few had Utah offers. I suspect most of the kids who are already committed had a Utah offer.
Many if not most of these kids sign elsewhere. Clearly, Utah prepares players above their star level. Utah is getting more and more players in the NFL and if I remember correctly some metric used by the pros, Utah is elite in this. Still, the number of highly ranked kids who commit is climbing at a snail’s pace. To be sure, joining the Pac-12 has helped Utah recuit higher ranked kids and dramatically increase depth.
Its hard for me to believe that Utah will have a lower ranked recruiting class this year. But it does appear to be headed that way. It is disheartening to look at the Top 300 and see how many kids are committed to the traditional Top 10-15 programs (with exceptions), including USC, Washington, and Oregon, compared to Utah.
If you look at the suite, Utah comes in with predominately 3* kids. Again, exceptions abound, Utah has picked up great 4* kids.
I’m still baffled by this. Is Utah too far away from three coasts? Is it in the way Utah deals with recruits and parents? For example, Utah lost Jayden Daniels to ASU because (among other things no doubt) Utah would not guarantee that he would start, which is the correct answer. ASU did. Is it because some folks think Utah is a LDS school? Is it because Utah does not have the storied past of for example USC, Ohio State, Alabama, Oklahoma, etc.?
I do look forward to the time when the state’s best players want to become Utes, and not Huskies or Ducks or Trojans or Bruins.
In the meantime, I am going to enjoy Utah’s great season.

ParticipantEverything I have heard is it was a split parent home. Dad wanted him to go to Utah. Mom wanted him to go to ASU. Mom did not like Utah at all.

ParticipantI don’t know if there is evidence that directly points the finger at Herm, but that b**sh*t was under his watch/leadership. I guess we’ll find out how sincere that apology is with Herms actions going forward.
Opening statement:
“I was embarrassed with our football team when it came to the fouls. We lost our composure and I don’t believe in doing that kind of stuff. It just mars the football game. I’ve never been involved in a game where a team got 12 fouls. For some reason, we just lost our composure. I don’t know. I can figure that out, why, but I don’t know. That’s not the way we play and I apologized to [Utah] for that.
