The Athletic came out this morning with its projected preseason Top 25 and it isn’t pretty.

They’ve slotted ASU as #9 and BYU as #10. The only other Big XII teams to make the cut are Baylor at #18 and KSU at #23. Not even an honorable mention of Utah (how soon they forget).

To my amateur view, it really looks like they are projecting and expecting past performance to be proof of future success (how did that work for us this season?). It also looks like they are really drinking the Kool-Aid on both ASU and BYU.

    Here are their comments:

    9. Arizona State (11-3)
Key returnees: QB Sam Leavitt, WR Jordyn Tyson, TE Chamon Metayer, DT C.J. Fite, LB Keyshaun Elliott, S Xavion Alford

Key transfers: RB Kanye Udoh (Army), WR Jalen Moss (Fresno State), CB Kyndrich Breedlove (Purdue)

There’s no reason ASU can’t contend for another Big 12 championship. While it loses all-everything running back Cam Skattebo, it brings back nearly everyone else and landed 1,117-yard rusher Udoh from Army. Eight starters return from a defense that allowed 19.2 points per game during its six-game winning streak to end the regular season and held its own against Texas in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal loss.

    10. BYU (11-2)
Key returnees: QB Jake Retzlaff, RB LJ Martin, WR Chase Roberts, LBs Isaiah Glasker and Harrison Taggart, K Will Ferrin

Key transfers: TE Carsen Ryan (Utah), DT Keanu Tanuvasa (Utah), DL Anisi Purcell (Southern Utah)

BYU spent most of the season in CFP contention, and there’s no reason the Cougars can’t break through and win the Big 12 in 2025. The conference schedule is challenging, with trips to Colorado, Iowa State and Texas Tech. BYU will enjoy continuity on offense, beginning with Retzlaff — who became a cult hero in his first season in Provo — whereas the defense loses much of its leadership. Special teams could be a strength.

I wouldn’t say we have zero. Carsen Ryan has been good when thrown the ball and so has Lohner. Dallen Bentley has been open all year and hasn’t had a half decent ball thrown his way. King looked good last year so you know the talent is there somewhere if you can find it in him again. The main problem is none of these guys can have the offense run through them like kuithe could.

I say put Bernard in at QB, Glover at RB , Kuithe / Carsen at fullback and let’s run them over. Left, right up the middle and kill the clock Witt style. Who is better our our OL or their DL? 250 plus rushing yards or you lose your truck!

I was thinking the same thing, I 100% expected the kuithe wildcat on that second fourth and two, especially considering Wilson got banged up a bit the play before.

What I’ve been wondering is what’s stopping us from doing it with one of our bigger tight ends? Why not put Carsen Ryan in as a fullback type thing and run him up the gut, he seems like he could be a powerful runner if need be.

Agreed. Bernard is looking good and has been healthy, but Mitchell is already playing hurt. That leaves only Stanley as a scholarship RB, but he’s very light. At the very least when Stanley is in the game, they should consider doing some tosses to the outside to get him to the perimeter instead of just sweeps that are very predictable, but of course Ludwig won’t do that.

Going back to the topic of scholarship RB’s, an injury to say, Mitchell, would leave us with only 2 scholarship RB’s in play. I guess at that point you rely on your passing game more? I think Utah could definitely make do if they ran Kuithe or Carsen Ryan as an H-back or Fullback in some packages while having two other TE’s on the field. There are a lot of ways we can mitigate a RB shortage imo. Of course, it would heavily depend on Ludwig being creative.

    That’s a very niche scenario…

Running backs are used way more than just on a 4th and goal. Plus, we also have other ball carriers for that if push came to shove. Kuithe or Carson Ryan could probably be used as an H-back in such a scenario. What big 12 D-line is stopping Kuithe at RB with Carsen Ryan and Dallen Bentley in at TE for blocking? Then you add in potentially King to create huge mismatches, forcing the defense to be weary of a potential pass.

I think you’re REALLY over exaggerating here dude, especially since we haven’t even seen Mitchell or Andrews play.
