    13. Utah Utes
    2023 record: 8-5, 5-4 Pac-12

Expected key losses: CB Miles Battle, G Keaton Bills, S Sione Vaki, S Cole Bishop, WR Devaughn Vele, CB JaTravis Broughton, RB Ja’Quinden Jackson, QB Bryson Barnes, QB Nate Johnson

Expected key additions: RB Anthony Woods, CB Kenan Johnson, TE Carsen Ryan, OT Isaiah Garcia, QB Isaac Wilson, LB Hunter Andrews, S Maurice Evans

2024 outlook: Injuries derailed the Utes this past season, as quarterback Cameron Rising and tight end Brant Kuithe missed the entire campaign while recovering from knee injuries and tailback Micah Bernard missed all but two games with an injury. The Utes struggled with consistency on offense and lost four of their last six games, including a 14-7 defeat against Northwestern in the SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl. There’s hope that Kuithe and Bernard might return with Rising in 2024, when Utah jumps to the Big 12. Four sophomores and one freshman started on the offensive line in the bowl game. Jackson, the team’s leading rusher with 797 yards, entered the transfer portal, as did backup quarterbacks Barnes and Johnson. Three starters will have to be replaced in the secondary.

Lots still in motion, but this isn’t a bad team (as always if injuries aren’t excessive). Still could use WR, DB, QB2. Lines look pretty good. Secondary a little younger and injuries could make it tough.

Someone with better FB knowledge can comment on all the mistakes and who should be where, but a pretty senior-laden team going into the Big 12 isn’t the worst way to join a new conference.

Haven’t heard the JJ return is a sure thing, but chances are better than they were last weekend. The uniform pics were taken prior to him notifying staff of his decision, so I wouldn’t use that as evidence he’s back. I think discussions with people outside of the program have helped. A lot regarding benefits of being somewhere you’re already an offensive focal point vs trying to break in somewhere new. Utah has money, but it’s also tough to compete with schools who were giving players 💰before it was cool. There’s been an influx of former Duncanville players (JJ’s high school) transferring to SMU. So the playing in hometown with hometown guys factor is something to take into account. Woods addition helps (source: “he’s a freak”), but JJ leaving would sting (regardless if you think he’s better than Tavion or not).

Wayy to thin at WR right now. Pittman and McClain are talented but have documented durability concerns. Parks is reliable but not a WR1. Losing out on Chris Brazzell and Josh Kelly was a real downer — especially with how well Brazzell’s visit went. There was real optimism there. Thank goodness for Throw-BLC (Brant, Landen, Carsen)

Well this would certainly be a good thing for BYU.

Numerous people posting on X saying that he wants to play offense – tight end. However none of these X posts seem to be anything more than just speculation – just “I heard that he wants to play TE.”

If that is true then it probably makes sense to go to BYU since Utah probably doesn’t want him on offense and besides he would have to compete against Landon King and UCLA transfer Carsen Ryan. Not to mention Kuithe if he comes back.

But, too much speculation and no substance yet on his reasons for leaning BYU now.

They are back to claiming February championships over Utah, so I did some digging. I kept seeing they won 11/17 head to head recruits with Utah. While that number is true, here’s the story. The dash lines are players that BYU signed with a Utah offer

Isaiah Garcia OL- .9118 – BYU offer
–Ikinasio Tupou OL – .8578 (small class, much rather have Garcia)

Isaac Wilson QB – .9070 – BYU offer
    –Carson SueSue QB/ATH -8544

    Davis Andrews S – .8797 BYU offer
Jeilani Davis S – .8786 (Colorado, USC, UCLA)
    Rabbit Evans S – .8581
    Luke Bryant S – 84 BYU offer

Zach Williams WR – .8825 (USC, UW, UA, ASU)
David Washington WR – .8825 BYU offer
    –Tei Nacua WR – .8444 (C’mon now – He wasn’t coming here)

    Hunter Andrews LB/ATH – .8828 (Texas, TAMU)
Ashtin Lopes LB – .8678 (UW, OreSU)
    –Ephraim LB – .8614 (Not a loss for reasons I won’t detail)
–Adney Reid LB – .8478 (They seem to have gone all in on Defense)

    Kash Dillon E – .8697 BYU offer
John Henry Daley E – 87 trf BYU player
–Devoux Tuataga E – .87863 (Small class – Him or Kash Dillon)
    –Kinilau Fonohema E -.8628
    –Siosefa Brown E – .8469
    –Sani Tuala E – .8417
–Vili Pouha E -.8444 (Premission Utah Signee, Sione works for Kalani)

    Carsen Ryan TE– 90trf
    –Ryner Swansen TE – .9087

    Utah Class average- 87.54
    BYU Class average- 85.48

Maybe two of those kids (Devoux Tuataga and Ryner Swanson) would have been preferred over recruits we signed? 5 of their 11 H2H “wins” were DE’s, which is NOT a position of need for Utah (and mostly all lower rated than Kash Dillon or JHD, except Devoux) 5 more were in positions where we signed a much better recruit (or 2)

We’re still going H2H for Faletau Satuala at S/ATH, which is leaning Utah

I think so. I think transfer/portal guys are coming in more experienced and are different enough to list separate than HS commits.

Could also list what school they came from:
    – Anthony Woods (RB, Idaho)
    – John Henry Daley (DE, BYU)
    – Kenan Johnson (CB, GT)
    – Carsen Ryan (TE, UCLA)

    247 has the list: link

Aren’t Kenan Johnson and Carsen Ryan transfer portal guys?

Thank you for making this BTW!

No. Among other rules, you have to be enrolled and taking at least 12 credit hours at the new school before you can play or practice with the team (that goes for every player, not just transfers). Since the earliest Carsen could enroll would be spring semester, he would not be eligible to participate in any team activities until January 2nd, assuming that’s when spring semester begins.

No, we had an AWESOME “throw game” when we had both Kuithe and Kincaid.

A combo of Kuithe and Ryan would be awesome and welcomed!!

    Hoping it happens!
