I was talking with Carsen Ryan’s aunt on Sunday at my brothers funeral. They were not happy that Utah didn’t push to get him but said that Chip Kelly had more contact with him than his mom during the process.
I agree that Carsen is obviously a good player based on his rating and offer list. But I trust our coaches and that they stay especially close to the local talent. And if for some reason they choose to pass on a 4* local kid, I trust they don’t see a fit. Seems crazy to pass on a 4* local kid, but I’m glad to know it was our choice vs Carsen wanting to go elsewhere.
I think I remember OnlyU posting that Carsen, although a good player who had worked really hard to improve, wasn’t going to be a TE at the P5 level so we moved on from him.

It’s always intriguing to me to see who we go after locally and who we don’t. I obviously can’t know all of the details and I think my favorite quote I’ve read recently about Scalley was “Morgan Scalley watched his tape and liked it. That’s the take.” basically stating if we don’t trust these dudes yet with who they go after and who they avoid, there’s something seriously wrong with us. Ben Roberts a high 3 star that apparently performed really well at some camps locally. I am not sure why we didn’t offer him. Seems talented but there must be something missing.
George Maile I think we would take him but he didn’t show interest in being a Ute so both parties moved on.

Great insights, thanks! Can you share more about Vakalahi? His 247 rating is super low. Just wondering if he’s expected to blow up with more exposure? Also, it looks like we’ve offered Alatini…anything you can share about him?
Carson is a very good player but doesn’t fit our scheme well. He would love to be a Ute and is a great kid but sometimes the fit just doesn’t match the scheme with the skill set we need or look for. That’s about as straight as I can put it…not a knock on him at all because he’s worked his butt off to improve and will find a place that matches up with his abilities much better than he would as a Ute.
It doesn’t appear we’ve even spent much IF any time on this kid, as there’s no offer there….But he does have an impressive national offer list & is rated as a low 4-star by 247Sports….I just don’t know exactly which others we’re currently targeting….This would be good for a Tweet @ Fred.

Totally agree. Do you know anything about him? Just wondering if he’s an LDS kid that wants to go to BYU and our staff knows that so they aren’t wasting time on him?
