So cool for WBB…amazing performance by both teams! Caitlin Clark put on a show!
What else did Iowa vs LSU’s 12.3 million viewers top?
🔲 10.4 million for Purdue vs Tennessee men’s Elite 8
🔲 9.5 million for 2024 Golden Globes
🔲 12.1 million for final round of the Masters last year
🔲 4 of 5 games from 2023 NBA Finals
🔲 Every World Series game in 2023
🔲 Every NBA game this season
🔲 Only 1 NBA Finals game in 2023 had more viewers
🔲 Most watched WBB game of all-time
🔲 Only 2 regular season 2023 CFB games were higher
🔲 Most watched ESPN college basketball game ever
🔲 More viewers than every MLB, NHL, & MLS in 2023For context on the potential $$$ in women's hoops…
ESPN recently signed a new media rights deal for women's March Madness worth $65 million annually — a 10x increase from the previous deal.
But that is already looking like a bargain.

But will it all go back to the mean once Caitlin leaves?

Caitlin and Angel Reese.
-
RickParticipant
Not sure they are in the same league in terms of popularity or TV eyeballs. The numbers don’t say so. You cannot compare LSU’s draw to Iowa’s in terms of national TV audience.
-
RedUte14Participant
i’m not comparing them, but angel reese is very popular as well. so the combination of the two helped push it over the edge.
-
RickParticipant
Yes, for sure. It was a great game without a lot of the crap that happened last year. Both sides were guilty of it too. It was also great seeing those two great players come together after the game in sportsmanship.

you said the same thing about the NBA finals twice.

Obviously Caitlin Clark/Iowa in a rematch of last year’s final against Angel Reese/LSU drove up the ratings. But it’s still super cool to see the positive impact it’s having on WBB in general. Tuning in to watch the Lady Utes make their tourney run last year showed me how entertaining of a product WBB is. And having this type of high profile matchup showcase the women’s game is just great for the sport.

It’s entertaining if you temper your expectations. Just like watching the Little League World Series is entertaining if you temper your expectations.

RickParticipant
I look at it as a completely different sport. Kind of like baseball is to softball. When you look at it that way you can appreciate both more easily. Some women’s sports are actually better than men’s IMO. Like tennis (minus the grunting!) and volleyball.

kinda seems like women’s CBB is becoming what men’s CBB was before they changed the draft rules and messed with other in-game rules as well.

HahnenwkParticipant
We’ve been going to the women’s games for years. The level has improved immensely. Not for everyone but we enjoy it. (We also go to the men’s games.)

Friday night's 2024 #WFinalFour matchup between No. 1 @IowaWBB & No. 3 @UConnWBB was the MOST-WATCHED #NCAAWBB game EVER 🎉
🏀 Peak 17M viewers
🏀 Highest audience for ANY BASKETBALL GAME on record

At 14.2 million viewers, last night's Iowa-UConn game averaged more viewers than:
• Any women's CBB game ever
• Every 2023 NBA Finals game
• Every 2023 World Series game
• The 2023 Orange Bowl
• The 2023 Big Ten Championship
• The 2023 Cotton Bowl
• The 2023 Pac-12… pic.twitter.com/ydDOaNpYjR— Joe Pompliano (@JoePompliano) April 6, 2024
