Earlier in the morning, I had heard rumours that #5 Michigan was in a battle with the D-IAA Mountaineers.
I arrived downtown to watch the day’s games at a now defunct sports bar, which served as Portland’s Michigan alumni home, just as the game had finished.

A young man was weeping outside the bar, two women attempting to console him. I walked up and asked them what the score was, not sure if he was weeping in joy/relief or sadness. One of the women raised her hand and said, “We’re still processing.”

It made my day and lifted my football spirits given that our Utes had been beaten in Corvallis that Thursday.

That was a great day for college football. My buddy went to one Michigan game during law school there. Which game? Bingo! He’s not a big football fan, but he sure enjoyed the reactions of the fans afterwards.

A bit off on a tangent, but you mention the reaction of the fans and I remember the ending of the Michigan-Mich St. game where with a few seconds left, the snap on a punt is mishandled and the Spartans take it in for a TD that ended the game.  One fan in particular looked particularly shocked and in great anguish.

Still relishing in the Utes ruining Harbaugh’s vaunted comeback debut in SLC — hard to believe that was 5 years ago.
