What Whittingham’s contract is worth. Fourth highest paid coach in the Pac-12. Three coaches on the list have won the South but make less than Whittingham. Interesting.

He is 24th overall in the nation and I would say he is a top 24 overall HC so I’m good with his salary.

So much this. We are paying for a coach to have us consistently ranked 20-25.

And Whitt has done exactly that.

BYU wasn’t content with the MWC.

THey alslo weren’t content with Bronco, to the point where he tried like crazy for three years to get an outside job. He finally found a job, and the program was set back decades by the next hire.

Oh wow. I didn’t realize bronco wanted out that badly. Three years is a long time.

IIRC he was a finalist for the Nebraska job.

It is so damn unlikely we could do any better. Sure we could find a coach that has strengths where whitts weaknesses are, but he would bring his own set of weaknesses and almost definitely not be as consistent as whitt<div><br></div><div>Feel like sometimes Utah fans forget just how much we have going against us. We are a cold weather school in a state with a ton of stigma that’s hard to overcome. We could very easily be Purdue or Boston college. Our own division is filled with sunny weather party schools. Very tough spot to recruit and id argue the only way to have sustained success is consistently finding under recruited gems and nobody is better at that than KW

Except this is a straw man argument. Even against the backdrop of all the negative things you list we have managed to recruit a boatload of good out of state “culturally diverse” athletes. That’s not the problem. The problem appears to be the low variance strategy that Whitt et al has deployed since joining the Pac 12. This is the strategy that works in the MWC when you are clearly the superior team however in the Pac 12 where you are at parity with many of the teams a higher variance more explosive strategy would have been called for. We have had the talent to win the south outright a few of the years but haven’t. By definition we could do better. Not sure who that person is but at some point sooner or later we will need to go another direction.

No contract renewal until we win the south.

We have already won the South – co-champs in 2015 with a 6-3 conference record (tied with USC).

I must have missed our trip to the Pac 12 conference championship that year. How did we do?

Whitt will retire at the end of his contract anyhow. That is after 2021. That is sooner than we realize, and we will have a complete new set of problems/strengths with the new coach.

Maybe we will get the next young “Urban Meyer” type but this time since the program is already a Power 5 school they wont feel compelled to jump ship after 2 years. I laugh at all the people that claim to know that there is no way ever any other coach could ever possibly in a billion years do better than Whitt. I don’t know if the next person will do better but it is certainly within the realm of possibility. Not like the dude has a schematically advanced philosophy or anything.
