As most of you know 1280 the zone ranks the 60 best players in Utah each summer before the season. They came out with the actual top ten according to their opinions. (This is Scott Gerrard’s pick. Hans’ picks are similar.) BYU fans are up in arms that Lloyd is ranked higher than Allgeier and Rising is ranked higher than Hall. I personally think Allgeier is an amazing RB, but give me a break – Lloyd was a consensus All-American. BYU fans also feel that Puka deserved to be on the list. I think they may be right about him.
Three guys who were in the initial top-ten from Utah who aren’t in the final top-ten are Kuithe, Tafua, and Phillips.
I know Utah State had a great season, but I honestly don’t know if these three Aggies should be ranked in the top-ten (maybe so). Covey is on the list because of his play as a returner more than his WR play. Lloyd should absolutely top the list. I think it is hard to keep Kuithe off the list, but he didn’t have the receiving yards I expected.
It’s all subjective and meaningless, but interesting.
- Devin Lloyd – Linebacker – Utah
- Deven Thompkins – Wide Receiver – Utah State
- Tyler Allgeier – Running Back – BYU
- Cam Rising – Quarterback – Utah
- Logan Bonner – Quarterback – Utah State
- Nick Ford – Offensive Lineman – Utah
- Blake Freeland – Offensive Lineman – BYU
- Britain Covey – Wide Receiver – Utah
- Nick Heninger – Defensive End – Utah State
- Jaren Hall – Quarterback – BYU

That’s comical they actually think Allgeier should be higher than Lloyd. Not surprising as they’ve always got the blue goggles on tight but comical since it isn’t even close. Lloyd is not only a consensus All-American but the only 1st round draft pick on the list…currently projected to go in the top 10 but certainly in the 1st round.

They use the ridiculous argument that when they met head-to-head, Allgeier won. I know that makes no sense, but …

You have to remember that their entire season essentially boiled down to a single game against us. So if a player played a certain way in the BYU/Utah game, it completely defines that player for the entirety of the year (in their minds). Even though Lloyd was a consensus All-American, they think he shouldn’t be ranked higher than Allgeier because he didn’t have as great an impact in the one single game that matters to them.
It’s tortured logic, but about what we’ve come to expect from Zoobland.

Poo Poo won the PAC12 in dramatic fashion though. -Local media probably.

Henninger is interesting. Do they take into account that he could not get on the field when he was at Utah? Give the kid all the credit for recognizing this, finding a place that would let him play and doing well. But it feels disingenuous to list him above players like Filinger or Tafua who he would probably be backing up if he hadn’t transferred.

MDUteParticipant
True but you could also make the argument that Zack Wilson would never had gotten on the field at Utah playing behind Huntley. However, he goes to the Y where he has an opportunity to not only be the guy but also an opportunity to sling it all over the field. And he made the most of it. I’m definitely not a BYU or Wilson fan but I give the kid credit for what he accomplished by becoming the 2nd pick in the draft.

In fairness, I still take Snoop over Wilson today. We will see though.
-
MDUteParticipant
No doubt, me too. Snoop has shown he should be a starter somewhere in the league.

As a Packers fan I’m wishing the Packers had taken Huntley rather than Jordan Love at this point. Might still happen if Huntley has a short contract — not sure his status.
-
MDUteParticipant
Pretty sure Huntley becomes a free agent at the end of this season.
-
Central Coast UteParticipant
Huntley is a free agent after this season and is looking to get a pay raise. I cant remember what his contract is for this year but it was something like 750 or 850k. He’ll be getting much more with his next contract
-
NarfUteParticipant
Huntley is an exclusive rights free agent. So, if the Ravens want him to backup Jackson and offer him a one year contract at the league minimum, he has to sign with the Ravens. Rather, he can’t negotiate with other teams so that’s his option. Sucks, hopefully the Ravens don’t take that route

I’m mostly fine with this list…I didn’t follow BYU enough to know if Freeland deserves to be there but I would swap out him and Henniger, for Thomas and Puka.

While interesting, I prefer to use the NFL Draft rankings. They seem to be a little more accurate.
