Smith and Rising had very similar Freshman seasons. Both threw 50% completion rates and had an interception in limited time. Their Sophomore seasons were also similar. Both lost out on the starting QB job and took over the starting job a few games into the season, after staying prepared. Upon taking over as starters they both completed roughly 65% of their passes, rushed for around 550 yards, and threw a very similar TD/INT rate. During Smith’s Sophomore season Utah won the MWC championship; Utah won the PAC12 championship in Rising’s sophomore season.

If these similarities continue in Rising’s junior season and he matches the increased production Smith saw between his Sophomore and Junior seasons, Utah will have a Heisman finalist in Rising and a potential undefeated regular season team. Isn’t it wild?

I think the secret formula to most any great season is having the same QB for all the games. Even better if it is at least their second season playing most of the games.

2004 – Smith started every game (undefeated)

2008 – Johnson started every game (undefeated)

2019 – Huntley started every game (11-3) Losses to USC, Oregon and Texas (those losses don’t look bad from a name perspective

What other years has a Utah QB played every game? And what were the records? Those three definitely stuck out.

The only other year which sticks out to me was possibly 1994. Details? Couldn’t find on http://www.utahutes.com
