I figured I would give 700 a chance again with OC. So I tuned in like two days ago and they were thoroughly breaking down TSPP win over KSU with some clown from TSPP.
I tune in now and the lead in is about TSPP. OC transitions into TSPP again to try to transition back to Utah.
Is that the best OC can do? I don’t want to hear about TSPP until the week of playing them. It is so bizarre to me that this appeals to sports talk radio.

I just can’t take sports talk anything anymore. So I can’t answer your question since I don’t listen to or watch it. Sounds awful though. 🙂

Home of the Utes where he says the name of TSPP more. He was breaking down TSPP rush attack and s**t as if it compared to Arizona because KSU played Arizona. It doesn’t correlate in my brain.
Admittedly it is grabbing at straws this early in the season I just don’t want to hear about TSPP at all.

I feel you man. I’d rather hear nothing from them or about them ever again. Going back to being in a conference with them is not what I wanted.

Ugh I feel you. Hopefully a Baylor win shuts some of these clowns up after this weekend

Baylor is BAD. i don’t see byu losing this one

BYU had a stretch of about half a quarter where everything went right for them and disastrously wrong for K-State (who controlled the other 53 minutes except for not ever finding the end zone.) Not often a team has 50% more total yardage but loses by 30.
Meanwhile Baylor licking their wounds after a last second Hail Mary forced overtime followed by being a foot away from a potential tying TD in OT. Worse yet those highlights have been shown about 1000 times across all forms of media. It will be interesting to see how they respond.

OC spends the first 30 minutes of every show talking Utah football. I think he does a good (not great) job. BYU is 4-0 and unfortunately deserves some discussion.
-
EagleMountainUteParticipant
Not on the home of the Utes. Go to whatever other show to do that.

Let me tell you something you already know…
Sports is a profession. Sports talk is a profession. They’re public figures, therefore, they can and do get paid to endorse products/brands on and off air. They have to be cognizant of what logo’s they wear in public. They don’t talk about things on the air that aren’t planned. If OC is talking about TSPP, it’s because someone is paying him to do so. That’s the upsetting part about it.BTW, this past week, I found that Coca~Cola controls Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. You can’t find a vendor that sells Dr. Pepper on the premises.
We live in a Corporatocracy.

Heaven forbid a local radio station talk about the different local teams. Some of you are as bad bitching about the media as the zoobs.
-
EagleMountainUteParticipant
So I am out of touch? I will lightly bitch never talk about it again and never listen for three more years. Just wondering if I am the minority.

Isn’t there a broadcasting / journalism department at the U? If I had the money to donate, I would love to see a station and website run by students in this field that conduct interviews and write articles about Utah sports only. I am with you, it is easy to find info about TDS or any of our opponents. I wish it was equally easy to turn it off when not interested. The content does not need to hake a ‘homer’ approach, just simply stay on topic that Utah fans are interested in. I must say it was much better when not in the same conference. I don’t mind reading about their team when I care to do so but the goofy articles that combine the interest of both are simply goofy.

You’re out of touch.
I’m out of time.
And I’m out of my head when you’re not around. -

Best way to listen to it BY FAR is to subscribe to the podcast and then only listen to specific episodes where they have a Utah specific guest (Scott Mitchell, Bill Riley, Sly, Dub, et al) or our only talking Utah football!!
I find those interviews to be good, informative and worthwhile to listen to.

The sad part about all local radio today, is that they do not know anything more than any of us. Back in the day, they could go to practice, and they had a feel for how the team looked, who would play. etc. Not today.
They interview coaches and players, and that can be interesting, but everyone is trained NOT to say anything of meaning. I listened to an interview with Morgan Scalley yesterday. I could have predicted every answer. There was no way he was going to give anything away. He wouldn’t even talk openly about the game last Saturday. I would like to have known what went wrong in the last five minutes of the game, but his answers were vague at best.
This is just the world we live in, so I have to accept it and wait until Saturday to see who plays, who looks good, etc,

THIS. I’m surprised they can even find a way to fill their entire time slots. I have a feeling this is why spence plays 30 seconds of music coming out of every commercial.

Proud,
I agree, mostly, with you post. I was a radio reporter and television producer many years ago in the market. Believe it or not, Judkins got me into Utah basketball practices which was nearly impossible back then. I loved the access and felt like I was truly on the beat. I was able to cover Utah and BYU football at the time as well and having that kind of access made it much easier. While reporters have much less access today and that makes it much harder, I do think they can ask questions to inform and educate the fans. Utah football is never going to allow a reporter to leak strategy on a game-to-game basis but why don’t reporters provide us insight into what we’re seeing. For example, I notice every week that one corner will be in press coverage and another eight to ten yards off. On the next play, it may change. Sometimes it seems like this is because of a matchup but not all of the time. What’s happening there? Another question, what does Utah do if they are going to blitz on a third and long. In choosing that action, does Utah try and manipulate a route or coverage so that a QB only has one look? Perhaps more important, why doesn’t Utah blitz more often on a third and long? Why does Utah choose to rush four, sometimes even three in those situations?
I’m blathering on but if I was in the media today, I would be discussing game decisions and strategy on the back end of games and try to tease out of coaches why they do certain over others as they prepare for opponents.
By the way, this was the only way to get strong reactions from John Stockton in his final years at Utah. I would log every play of the game and look for trends and key plays to ask him about. My intent was to see if there was anything strategic/intentional going on that created those ups and downs.
I don’t know how many media members critically watch the teams and games they cover. That should always be a thing, regardless of access.
Forgive a soapbox like answer. If you’re thinking that I miss being in sports media, you’d be right. I’m a bitter man now.

I would guess it is because it is much more now a business with real impacts back to coaches that need to win. Being open with insights does not get rewarded, wining gets rewarded. Understanding how they played situations last week give insight about how they will likely play them coming up. Sometimes bump or cushion has many factors like score, time of game, matchups or effort to be less predictable. I think CBs on the line and deep safety plays off each other like the single high safety leans toward the more aggressive and risky bump or they play off the rush play knowing the plan to rush quick throws vs coverage. We do know Scalley mixes some aggressive plays into a bigger strategy to force others into longer drives hoping to force errors. We already know Utah is conservative with a lead at the end of a game. Myself, I am happy to let the coaches have their secret sauce as to how they approach situations but I also think for better or worse, they react to the feel of the game.

I don’t listen live so I’m able to listen to what I want on spotify. If I see a byu guy in the title, I don’t listen.
To be fair, byu does have a large market share in Utah so it does make some sense to talk about them a bit. Especially since we share a conference now.
