Just found out that Lance Reynolds Jr. is coaching as the OC at Orem high. It suddenly makes a lot more sense why we have such a hard time getting guys that play there to give us any attention at all. Lance is for obvious reasons a HUGE BYU homer, and would absolutely do everything in his power to get players to not go to Utah.
One thing that many people don’t know is that his father, Lance Sr., very nearly became the Associate HC at Utah. Lance was literally minutes away from offically becoming the HC at BYU when he got a call saying that the powers that be changed their minds and they were going to name Bronco the HC. At that time Lance and Whitt spoke (they are good friends) and Lance would have left to coach at UofU had his two youngest boys not been at BYU at that time.
Several years down the road he got scapegoated by Bronco, and lost his retirement. Kyle found out, and offered Lance the Associate HC job at Utah. From what I understand he nearly accepted it but ultimately decided not to (he didn’t elaborate in regards to why, most likely because he was getting old and tired). I don’t quite remember exactly when this happened, but at the time his youngest boy Houston may have still been at BYU.

If what you say is true, seems like he’d be more than willing to be open to a kid choosing Utah.

Lance Sr. Is not the same person as Lance Jr.. Both are still loyal to BYU, but Jr. cares a lot more than Sr. I don’t even know if senior watches football anymore. I used to sit next to Jr. at BYU games. He is very passionate (hotheaded). Great guy, but quite different from his father.
They will always be a BYU family. Dad and boys all played there. Dad coached there for a very long time. Sr. Is too levelheaded to toss that out the window because of BYU leadership shenanigans.

Ok but didn’t you say BYU screwed Sr over? And that Sr and therefore their family have a great relationship with Whitt, given he was offered a job by Whitt??
-
chinngiskhaanParticipant
No sr. has always had a good relationship with Whitt, they go way back. His words weren’t screwed, that is my own interpretation of the events.

After that story, I don’t see why he’d still be a BYU homer… [Edit: I swear that is the second time recently that I have responded with the same sentiment as another poster, but just a moment too late… 😉]

I don’t understand this either. Can you please provide more info…your post doesn’t make any sense.

Yes, most confusing post ever. I wouldve guessed major utah fandom

You don’t know their family. Like this said, he didn’t say screwed, that is my own interpretation of the events. He was visibly frustrated, but that was like 1 day after he left BYU. Jr. wasn’t involved in any of that and may not have even been told. Matt was there when Sr told us, but jr. was not.
You not understanding the level of their fandom is not the same as the post being confusing. I haven’t reread what I wrote, but you seem to be confused about what took place, not about what was written. Is that correct?

It does make sense, you just don’t understand how someone who’s father was scapegoated by an institution could still be a fan of said institution. Sr. Felt upset about it at the time, but his loyalties to his alma matter eventually won. Jr. is a bigger BYU fan than Sr. ever was.
My story (not the exact wording just the events) are straight from lance sr.

It’s confusing because you share that he’s a huge BYU homer and then share a story that doesn’t support that at all.
At the very best it’s an unrelated story that isn’t super relevant to the topic at hand. At worst it’s confusing and misleading.

What? Jr USA huge BYU homer, not Sr.
I said in the post that it was random. The fact that Jr coaches at Orem is relevant because he will actively direct his players to BYU or at least away from Utah.
The story about his dad is only tangentially related, and yes it is random.

No one is doubting your telling of the story. The gap is that you don’t tell us why the son has animosity to Utah, especially in light of his father being wronged by the parochial school. If anything, we believe that would help Utah rather than hurt since your story makes it appear as if Whitt and the family have a good relationship.

I don’t think jr. has animosity to Utah, if he does it’s simply because he is a BYU fan. He would just prefer that his players not help his rival school

I’ve often wondered what it is that makes so many Utah kids avoid Whitt’s program. I can’t speak to anything but it is really strange how anyone with any kind of rating at East goes elsewhere. Tunuufi is starting for UW as a true freshman and I was in the same dorm as his dad/uncle. I don’t think Roberts ever seriously considered Utah before committing to UW and then to Oregon.
Coaches ties to the parochial school makes sense so Orem could easily be the same.
