The second part of national signing day. Wed was normally the national signing day but this year they added an early signing period.

The early signing period has been around for a few years. I can’t remember how the first year went for Utah, but we only signed a few players early last year. This year, we signed the majority of our class. There are a few known commits that will sign tomorrow, and there is really only one up in the air: Togiai out of Idaho. Utah is the favorite, but Washington has been making a late push. I may be wrong, but I don’t expect to see any surprises. The class is almost 100% full right now….

LOL – so true.
It’s back fill time
-
mfaulk80Participant
There isn’t much room to back fill. I think there might be a space for a single transfer and that’s it….
We got burned by a few transfer kids last year, so it seems like the coaches don’t want to rely on that as much. I’m guessing that’s why we got that JC kid over a transfer.

We’ll bring in the highest rated class in school history tomorrow – Top 30 overall. Awaiting one more player as mentioned below – Togiai, who we’re still the favorite for but will have one spot open (most likely) under the initial limit for a portal transfer at Safety or less likely at LB.
Signed the majority of the class during the early signing period so not much to do but bring in the last 4-5 already committed. No surprises really expected.

Agree. Utes need some immediate LB and DB-Safety support. Did not realize a number of the new H.S. kids are one and done or out of the gate mission kids. 100% supportive of it, just makes the immediate support and 2-3 year development a little more complex for some position groups. Kids returning from their mission make it a wash in terms of numbers. Don’t recall seeing any LBs or DBs in the return mission group?
Next years defense has a bit of the year to year BB program excitement of a clean slate of new kids coming in :)! Thankfully happens for all the right reasons in football…Go Utes!
Go Utes!

This year seems either on par or less than normal: 2 definite sign and sends (Moea’i and Tanuvasa); 1 leaning towards play 1 then go (vs not at all – Ritchie). 1 that was going to be a sign and send, but seems to have changed his mind (Fotu). And then Togiai if he commits (sign and send).
Most likely, we’ll have 3 that we won’t see on campus next year.
We have 5 that are coming back from missions.
So we’re being in more than we’re letting go…

Utes signed 3 higher ranked DE than Togia – hard pass.
For the love of sweet baby jesus- there is a starting spot open at LB… why can’t the get a quality LB!!!!!!!!!!
-
mfaulk80Participant
Togiai didn’t attend the big camps that get people those stars, and he played in Idaho. As a result, he’s flown under the radar. Washington has been pushing him hard, and they want him available next Fall. He has the body and potential to be great.
The biggest reason why he shouldn’t be a pass by your logic, however, is that he’s supposedly a mission kid. In that case, he doesn’t count against our numbers this year. And he’s not in the same class as the other DLs that we signed since none of them are missing kids.
If Togiai commits, then he doesn’t prevent us from getting a LB…. assuming his plans stay the same and he goes on his mission right away
I don’t disagree on the LB concern though. There were a few quality ones that were really close to signing…but then had a late change of mind.

Good point. If he’s a mission kid then I guess I’m good with that.
-
UteThunderParticipant
Correct me if I’m wrong here, but if he signs a letter of intent then he counts against this year’s numbers even if he goes on a mission. And ever since Langi transferred to BYU post-mission, Kyle has been having most (if not all) of our mission kids sign an LOI to prevent them transferring without having to sit a year post-mission.
-
mfaulk80Participant
Missionaries sign a different letter, and it doesn’t take up an initial. It would be really dumb to take missionaries otherwise as they’d count in two different classes (when they leave and when they return). I believe missionaries sign a ‘financial aid agreement’ or something like that….

AT-ATs will be dispatched throughout Hoth to collect signed commitment letters?

Biggest story right now is 3* LB Bodie Schoonover final 3 choices will be BYU,Utah, and UCLA, If he doesn’t pick BYU then for sure will be a Ute.

I don’t think Utah was even in the discussion for Schoonover. I don’t believe he even visited. Apparently, his family is full of die-hard TDS fans, and as such, Utah didn’t really ever get a look.
