I’ve got a new issue at my house. Right next to where I sit in my office in the wall is the valve that controls the water coming into the house. Whenever any water is turned on the valve/pipe vibrate so loud it sounds like I have the Ute Marching band tuba section blowing loud note at me. If I mess with the valve the vibration can go away, but comes back when I put the valve back to fully open.

I think perhaps I have too much pressure coming into the house.

Have you checked out your house valve at all? Is there anything happening out there? (The one probably near the street somewhere, upstream from your irrigation.) I wouldn’t mess around with this one esp before winter

I haven’t. The HOA blew out the sprinklers and shut off the outside water last week. They “assured” me that it is not related, but the timing was right in line with when they blew out the lines.

Looking for a plumber, not a proctologist.

I’ve used Shamrock plumbing a few times and have been happy with their services.

Tony, it’s likely you have a bad pressure reducing valve. I had the same issue a few months back, terrible hammering noises and pipes shaking. The part itself is about $280 (at least to replace what I had with the same thing). My dad was a plumber (long since retired) so luckily I have a certain amount of knowledge as well as access to tools if I don’t have what I need. Depending on where the pressure reducing valve is and if it is easy access you probably aren’t looking at too much time to pull out and replace.

Thanks for the info. I suspect we have one and it is worn out. I have no idea where it is. Perhaps by the street.

Mine is directly after the shut off valve for the main water into the house. So waterline comes in from outside – shut off valve – pressure reducing valve. It’s there because it was the most convenient place to get access to it, so that is where we chose to install it. When I moved into the house the pressure reducing valve was up in the ceiling joist area about 10 feet away from the shutoff valve. We put a new one in that lasted about 15 years and that is the one I just replaced.

It could be outside your house, but my bet is it’s somewhere inside after your main water shut off valve. What you are looking for is fairly big, brass, and is bell shaped on one side. It likely has a green metal tag that has the brand name of Watts on it, although it could be another brand. It probably has big brass unions on both ends, or it could just have a union on one end and be threaded into a fitting on the other side. If your mechanical room isn’t where the water line comes into the house, the pressure reducing valve could be in there somewhere. It should be before your water heater and/or water softener if you have one.

Hopefully who ever you can get to do a service call can locate it quickly and get it swapped out for you.
