He could be our guy (early in the season or post Rising)!

Always thought Rose had the advantage coming into spring ball. When listening to Rising a couple years ago he kept coming back to how running the scout team was invaluable for him. When Nate got the 3rd team QB tag it almost guaranteed him to come into spring behind Rose. 3rd string gets so few snaps.

Agree. Rose might actually have more snaps at QB and got some experience on the scout team. I wonder if they used Nate some for teams with mobile qbs (e.g. Richardson).
No doubt Nate is an amazing athlete and has a decent arm it seems, but agree that he’d probably leave if he doesn’t be qb2 (as would Rose). It’d be awesome if Nate was open to switching positions, but he was a 4* qb out of HS and deserves a chance to start somewhere (here at some point or other place if needed). Same for Rose, although he doesn’t have the same speed.
Barnes is good for a quarter or two. Emergency qb. Love him, but he needs to be qb3.
Nice that we have enough depth (until we don’t – injuries can happen fast) that this is a problem. We’ll have the best player on the field and hopefully still have strength at backup and development for next year.

@DATA – JQJ got two shots at QB at P1 schools. It would great if Johnson would stick around to play slot. He seemed to have more quickness a twitch than Covey.
But I agree that he would likely transfer.

I am worried that whoever does not get the backup nod will go to the portal. This is why I suspect that there will be NO decision in spring ball. They need all of these guys in the summer.
I like what Johnson brings to the table with his amazing speed. But if Rose is the better passer – who knows? It may come down to who is best at reading the defense and how they react under pressure.

Fully expect we will lose a minimum of 1 QB and 1 RB to the portal following spring ball, unfortunately. Just the nature of college football now
-
UtesRuleParticipant
Agreed and that is why we keep recruiting 4 star QB’s (e.g. Mack Howard) and RB’s (multiples in last recruiting cycle) because of the portal.
It’s incredible where we are as a program now versus when we entered the Pac12 and couldn’t land even 1 4* QB prospect.

Other than Travis Wilson?

By the way, we know what Barnes brings to the table and for me this is not nearly enough to lead a top-15 team to another conference title. It would have been a fantastic story to see a pig farmer, non-scholarship player from a school of 200 kids end up leading us to a conference championship. But, I think we have seen what Barnes has to offer and it’s not enough IMO. I thought he may transfer to Weber or SUU during the off-season. I have to give the kid credit for sticking with it. Good for him!

I wouldn’t worry about it. It is what it is. You will probably always have a returning starter, a freshman and a transfer QB on your depth chart. If you are lucky and can get two HS QB’s to sign, you might have a fourth QB or a walkon.
And then at the end of the spring, one young guy will stay, the returning starter will stay and you bring in a transfer that will be promised to compete for the job next spring when the starter leaves. Then, next spring, the transfer, former FR QB and the new FR QB will compete for the job. The loser between the transfer/old freshman/possible RS or walkon transfers out and it all begins again.

Nobody has been sleeping on him. We were all just dazzled by Nate’s flashes of speed. It’s a true battle for qb2 for sure.

SOWhatParticipant
Yea he’s fast, but just because he’s fast doesn’t mean he can throw the ball and read defenses. Just saying.
