Just in time to rescue us from the misery that is college football, basketball season is upon us! To be fair, basketball probably won’t actually rescue us from misery, but at least there will be fewer timeouts along the way.
Utah 100 – Alcorn St. 59
Crowd was a little bigger than I expected!
Breakdown of our new team:
Strengths: Shooting. Yes, we can actually shoot this year. And that’s a good thing because…
Weaknesses: Athleticism. Rebounding. Post play. (Granted, Lovering did not play last night)Our players:
Gabe Madsen: This is his team this year. He is the heart and soul. Went off for 27 last night.
Miro Little: Classic PG. Best part of his game is distribution. Not a good shooter.
Ezra Ausar: Will be fans’ favorite player. Slasher, finisher at the rim. Gets fouled a lot. Too bad he can’t shoot FTs.
Mike Sharavjamts: Not very athletic but he can shoot. Mongolian.
Jake Wahlin: Pretty much a stiff on offense. He’ll get minutes because he can rebound.
Mason Madsen: Like his brother but not quite as good. Good shooter.
Keanu Dawes: Will get minutes as a role player. Pretty well rounded game, but plays like he’s young.
Joul Karram: Probably won’t play much once Lovering comes back. We’ll get mashed up in the Big 12 this year for sure, but we’ll win a few games. This team really needs Lovering back, and Lohner would help immensely. Go Utes!

Nice to watch a Ute victory after a rather rough month on the football field.
Would like to see more inside play as some nights those treys simply won’t fall.
Hope we get some of our post players back soon.
Guess Lohner will join in a few weeks. Will be interesting to see the reception he gets in Provo.
Found it curious that after starting 1-6 from the charity stripe (including an air ball) Ezra knocked down 2 throws when shooting with an empty lane on the flagrant one call as players seem to often miss more in that situation.

Thanks for the breakdown. We’ve gone from the athletic Pac12 to the more athletic Big12. When will the coaches figure out we need athletes and development to be competitive or a rich sugar daddy to buy developed athletes. NIL is sucking the life out of our program.

Looks like Smith is building a 3 point shooting team, which when hitting on all cylinders can win some games. Only problem, after the two Madsen brothers and maybe Mike S., there is no reliable outside shooter. Coach has his son on the team, and the only reason I can think of is he is a great shooter (Don’t know).
I had hopes for Erickson, and he shows some solid play, but not great so far.
Was watching the game with my son and sorry to say I kept calling Mike S. “the” Mongolian. I really can’t pronounce his name and I don’t know if the play by play guy could either. But, the guy can shoot lights out.
Hoping last night was what it was, an early season practice game, trying a lot of guys to see what stands out.
Go Ute Basketball. Depending on you to provide a competitive product for watching!

The athletic department did a nice job of marketing the Andre Miller Bobblehead about 6 hours before game time. They put out 50 bobbleheads on a table and they were gone about an hour before game time. You can’t make this stuff up.
