Big 12 Travel Destinations

I have been to a few of the Big 12 conference venues. They were in the PAC at the time. People who visited Big12 football destinations what is your opinion of the cities and football venues? Where is the best places to vists? Don’t bother with the TDS, I will never visit again.

Following. I still will follow and watch the Utes, but my interest in putting money out to travel to away games (and I don’t live in Utah) is waning with the whole college environment – NIL/transfers, etc. I’ve been to Tempe, Tucson, Boulder, and TCU (back in MWC days), but none of the other places (ok, have passed through Waco, Lubbock, and Manhattan and been to Orlando and Houston, but not for football). I might consider driving over to Kansas or KSU for an overnight, but that’s going to depend.

Tucson: I like the city. Better if it’s 2nd half of the season so it’s not so hot, but Pima air and space museum, cacti, etc. Underrated city.
Tempe: Part of broader PHX. Sprawling city (5th largest city, 10th largest metro in the US). Some stuff to do. Overrated city IMO.
Waco: Only driven through. I guess there is the Dr. Pepper museum and some like to go to Magnolia.
Provo: nm, don’t go
Orlando: I mean, travel destination: Disney, Universal (my preference, but my cousin works there and hooks us up), space coast. Easy to make it a family trip. But we probably won’t play there again for 4, maybe 6 years?
Cincinnati: Been to Ohio, but not this city. Had Skyline chili. Not interested in going, but maybe if there was a Bengals game the same weekend it could be something to do?
Boulder: I live in South Denver, so not really fair. Obviously stuff to do in Denver, the mountains, etc. Pearl street performers. But the airport is in West Kansas, so …
Houston: Huge city (4th largest, 5th largest metro), stuff to do I guess (space center), diverse food options. Gotta be late in the season and it still will likely be muggy. I probably won’t go unless it somehow coincided with a cruise departure or something (and we aren’t cruisers).
Ames: no idea
Lawrence: no idea, but proximity to KC which is all right (had fun there with my kids passing through – lots of cool museums, bbq). KC is underrated, but not sure about Lawrence.
Manhattan: only have driven by it on the freeway and was surprisingly pretty (rolling green hills, but maybe it was just the 1 month it looks like that). Might drive there once
Stillwater: no idea and have no interest in going there.
Fort Worth: DFW fastest growing metro (4th largest) has tons to do all around. Been there for a TCU game and an Armed Forces bowl game, but it’s been a long time. But been to DFW many times and could make for a nice trip.
Lubbock: Driven through, stayed the night once. Not much to do there, but there is a Dion’s pizza (ABQ-based chain I worked for in HS).
Morgantown: no idea, no desire to go there (hard to get to). But WV is like the CO of the east. Highly recommend it for outdoor adventure (New River Gorge National Park, whitewater rafting (warmish water?!), via ferrata, etc.). Underrated state. But again, no idea about the college town.

If there is an away game in Morgantown during September or early October: whitewater River rafting in the New river gorge or the Gauley River is a world class experience. I did it once when I lived on the east coast and it was incredible. (And you don’t have to know what you are doing, you just sign up with a guiding company and sign the waivers as there is some real risk involved.)

And September / early October is really the only time you can do it, as that is when they are releasing all the water from the dams.

Reading this topic makes me realize I know even less about the Big 12 and its teams than I thought.

Cincinnati is a river port. You can book yourself onto a authentic riverboat. Nice way to see America.

Don’t sleep on Manhattan Kansas it is a great small town and college atmosphere. Downtown is fun, even if it is small, and the stadium is really nice.
