It’s easy to blame the quarterback. However, last night several times the receivers weren’t open in the brief time Isaac had to throw the ball.

Agreed. We did a horrible job most of the night picking up the blitz. Isaac did not play great. There’s no doubt. But he’s a true freshman. There were many other issues pointed out that hurt us too. Kuithe believing they knew the routes they were going to run etc. The unimaginative playcalling offensively.

The receivers haven’t really been open in years and it’s not due to the lack of talent.

Yeah, I find myself wondering about this, especially this season.

Seems like when the other team is on offense, their receivers often have a ton of space. This has been true throughout the year. I know the defense has been pretty good at stopping other teams from scoring, but our pass defense has looked pretty bad.

On the other side, why does it seem like our receivers are almost never open, or at least a step or two in front of the defender? As you mentioned, the spacing on offense has been an issue more often than not. The only consistent exceptions being the tight ends during the rose bowl years.

I have meant to look at this more closely but Utah does not do well in gaining WR separation. I know almost every player, line or secondary, offense or defense, looks to confuse or mislead the opponent for a second in the first seconds after a snap. I know receivers make moves in previous plays to set up other moves later. I know receiver coaches help players refine how to go about this. I know down and distance circumstances and film study sets the table for this. I know receivers must work hard at separation skills and talent does mater. But at the end of the day, I have to agree that our opponents seem to get a leg up on us recently. I think this is fundamentals and hard to address in season. I also think this is the ultimate measure of WR coaching.

Utah would be 7-0 with Barnes under center, but I still think that an 8th year CR is justified; by than, he’ll definitely be 110% healthy and can takes us to the play offs.

anybody blaming a true freshman QB needs to check themselves and just leave their fanhood at the door as they leave.

Well, I want to blame the coach that didn’t have someone already in place so that the true freshman QB was not needed but apparently he’s finally left the building. He didn’t empty the trash from under the kitchen sink before leaving though so someone else has to deal with the stink, even if they didn’t make the mess.
