ParticipantI love Bronco Mendenhall. He is a great coach. I think he will do great things at Utah State… If he stays for more than a year.

ParticipantI think this is homerun hire for Utah State.
Jay Hill or Bronco would be lifers for that school (or Hill would be a lifer until he got the Utah job).
The MWC or PAC conference are extremely winnable. They will be on the top of the conference for a while now. Great hire for Utah State.

ParticipantAgree with most of that but I question whether Bronco will be a lifer. Put up a couple of good seasons and when the P2 start throwing money at you it’s tough to not take the Gary Anderson to Wisconsin route. Anderson could have been king of Logan for as long as he wanted and potentially a consistent rival to Boise and occasional thorn in Whitt’s side.

ParticipantI read an article where he said the biggest reason for taking the Utah State job is to be close to him mom, who’s 93 years old. I’m guessing that as long as she’s around, Bronco will too.

ParticipantYeah, I remember when Mike Hampton said he took the highest offer to pitch in Colorado because of the great school system.

ParticipantYeah, money talks but it’s not like he’s getting a massive pay raise from New Mexico to Utah State. Plus he’s leaving a state flagship school for one that’s 3rd tier at best in Utah. Personally, I think getting a bump in salary plus coming back to Utah both worked to make the job attractive. Remember, that Bronco was retired and in his ranch in Montana when he made a shock return to take over a rebuilding job in Albuquerque.

Participant800k from 1.2 to 2.0 seems like a pretty good raise to me. It’s always about the money. More money for his assistant coaches, more money for him, not working for a different boss than hired him thus greater job security so he has a better chance at earning that extra money. Easier access to west coast recruits so he can keep earning that extra money and eventually set himself up for even more money in the future.
Everything else mentioned in that DNews article is the same fluff the teacher’s unions throw out there. “We want smaller classes, better supplies, better working conditions and more money. But we’ll settle for just more money” so that we can claim the same needs in 3 years when we threaten to strike again.
