First and foremost, Burgess has coaching chops. He crosses most, if not all, the boxes. Strong recruiter, strong big-man coach (and knows other positions, strong tactician. It’s also important that Coach Smith have a former Ute (if possible) on the staff. Given the proud tradition and the number of former athletes in the community, Smith made a significant mistake not hiring Burgess last year. I’m not saying this issue should be the priority for a head coach but it should be a priority. Both Majerus and Krystowiak had immediate conversations with Chris Hill about former Utes to hire when they were first hired.
