USU is cursed for opposing in-state team QB’s. BYU has gotten the worst of it, but Utah hasn’t fared well either:

2 of the last 3 games vs. them had QB injuries:
2015 – Travis Wilson has to leave game with shoulder injury, enter Kendal Thompson.
2012 – Jordan Wynn gets hit late, ruins his shoulder – Enter Jon Hays and we lose.

Vs. BYU (Relevant because they played USU a lot more over the Utah in Pac-12 era)
2021 – QB leaves with a concussion (Romney)
2019 – QB leaves with a concussion (Hall)
2017 – QB leaves with a concussion (Hoge)
2016 – QB injures elbow, done for college career (Hill)
2014 – QB breaks leg, done for season (Hill)
2012 – QB tears MCL (Hill)

USU is not good this year and our D should win this game – Let Wilson have the whole game.

So are you hoping for Wilson to get injured? 🙂

Of course not, but a healthy Cam is much more important starting 9/21. Being at that 2012 game in person was almost as bad as being at the 2007 UNLV game in person – There is some bad juju going on with the aggies.

I have different reasons to think Cam should sit out. Mainly I think we can win with Wilson, and I’d love to see Wilson get more in-game reps.

Tony, I get what you are saying, and it makes some sense. But, I think I still want to see Cam play a half. I think Cam still has some timing issues to work out with his receivers before we go to Stillwater the next week.

        Either way – Go Utes!!!

Agree Proud. Almost two years removed from playing elite D1 football his performance at this point is impressive. It’s not talked about enough how hard it is to come back from a major injury and play at a high level right away. He still needs more reps to get the arm strength back, timing with his new receivers in the game plan. He’s only going to get better. Dude likes contact, can’t help himself.

Seeing as how Cam missed all of 23 and hasn’t finished a half yet in 24, as ProudUte said we need to get him more in-game chemistry with the pass catchers before Stillwater. Also, the Cam-less offense only managed 14 on SUU and got shut out by Baylor. Don’t need to play him 4 quarters but let’s not play 2023 Utah and put this game entirely on the defense and have to sweat all game.

This is a little…disingenuous. Yes, Wilson only put up 14 vs SUU, but he was playing with the scrubs and we didn’t open up the offense.

I mean, Wilson went 7/11 with a TD vs them. That is not bad. Even vs Baylor…he wasn’t as bad as everyone is saying he was. Aranda is a good DC and he basically sent the house every single play. That is really tough for a kid who thought he wasn’t going to play.

I really think IF Wilson plays this weekend, we see a completely different QB.

I agree. We don’t know if Rising will stay healthy and we need Wilson up and running. This will be an easy win, let Wilson have a full week of prep, his playbook and let him build some confidence for when we will need him later on in the year.

If Cam doesn’t play at all versus the Aggies, he will only have played three quarters and some change this entire football season. If his injury is minimal and he’s ready to go, he has to get some snaps prior to traveling to Stillwater.

Nah, he doesn’t need a single snap to be ready to play vs OSU. Have you guys not watched him at all so far? He has about one game’s worth of stats:

        18/29, 62%, 346 yards, 7 TD’s, 0 INT’s.

If you think that isn’t game ready…He has been lights out this year and absolutely humming. If not for a cheap hit, we are all talking about sitting him vs USU because he looks so amazing it’s not worth playing him and risking injury.

Not sure if you’re being ironic but, having watched both games, I have to disagree. He’s certainly not at the level of pre-injury 2022.

If Cam is healthy and ready to go he plays period end of story.

Game observations from about mid 1st qtr until CR left the game. CR struggled moving the ball after the gifted field position TD by the defense. Other than the following series with his big run and wide open pass to Money Parks stalling in the RZ, the offense was ineffective throwing the ball up until CRs injury. Credit to Baylor’s defense making adjustments having an impact. I’m sure a lot of factors in play Ludwig and KW are figuring out.

Does anyone know the extent of Cams injury? I think that will determine if he plays or not. If he has any chance of reinjuring his hand sit him.

Sure he needs reps but we need him healthy for OSU reguardless of the rust. He has lots of big game experience and Wilson would be like a deer in the headlights.

Only word I’ve read/heard is a laceration. Not sure where, how, how big, etc.

Info I have is index finger on throwing hand.

There was a time when QB’s were taught to throw with their Index finger off the ball. If that is the limit of the damage, it shouldn’t affect his throwing as much as middle or ring finger would.

Why would it be his index? His middle and ring were the ones tapped at the game. It seems odd it would be any finger other than those two unless those two were jammed and they tapped just as a precaution

Rumor is he’s fine and is available for Utah state. Whether the coaches play him or rest him is up in the air. Of course, nothing official. Opinions on whether should play or not abound.

I have heard laceration and x ray was negative. That could mean stitches on the index finger? If that’s the case let it heal. It could be healed or at not in danger of making it worse plus the pain and grip on his throwing hand.

I’m sure Whitt will let us know his status. Not.

I expect that Cam will start if he can grip and throw accurately. I don’t expect Cam needs much at all of a week specific game plan. However, he should slide before a hit as much as possible and he should throw the ball away (with a much better motion) rather than run out of bounds. His rushing yards need to be few and without contact. Cam is still working his way up to the preinjury level and needs to close that gap for the OSU game.

As for Wilson, I expect the game plan to be tailored to him with the the lion share of practice reps for him. The game plan needs to key off how to punish many defenders in the box to run blitz. Que screen passes, Tom Brady quick passing to short routes and misdirection end runs.

Rising will play if he is cleared.

Yup, and if cleared and if Rising plays, Wilson will still play at least a half because we will absolutely destroy USU with Rising.

There are lacerations and lacerations. If it is an inconsequential nick then it doesn’t matter when he comes back. If it is a significant lac with suture over or on the side of the knuckle- it needs time to heal or it will split open again. It could be bolstered with tape or steri-strips for game time. But playing with a not-healed and significant laceration would be a risk of starting over completely on the healing time if it splits.

Typically suture is left in for about 7 days assuming it is non-absorbable. Another option would be to leave the sutures in for the game, tape over it, and take the suture out after the game.

Again it all depends on the significance of the laceration- and we probably don’t know.

I don’t know anything about this but want to ask, if we didn’t see blood when he got up but had it covered, is this a sign that it is not of the significant type?

You would think so. Announcers said they saw blood but I didn’t.

I know it drives us all crazy speculating every week who is hurt and how bad. We need a Ute hub spy to infiltrate the program and get the inside scoop.
