SALT LAKE CITY – It was 74 degrees and sunny today for the 16th practice of Utah football fall camp, giving the Utes another perfect day to improve.
Media Observation Highlights…

• Tyler Huntley rolled out of the pocket to complete a pass to Siaosi Wilson over the middle for a first down.
• Troy McCormick, Jr. showed versatility in the slot and in rushing.
• Cooper Bateman and Bronson Boyd were in sync for multiple plays over the middle for decent gains.
• Cooper Bateman stepped into the pocket for a 35-plus yard touchdown to Demari Simpkins.
• Both Kylie Fitts and Filipo Mokofisi showed quick feet in forcing the quarterback out of bounds.
• Cooper Bateman found Jameson Field over the middle for a 20-yard touchdown.Post-Practice Thoughts with Head Coach Kyle Whittingham…
On the status of the kicking game right now…
“It is down to two guys in Chayden Johnston and Matt Gay right now. We are going to try and compile as much body of work in the next week or so of practice and then decide who we are going to send out there.”On if kicking becomes a problem if he will push the ball on the offense a little more…
“Well that certainly factors into it. If you have a fourth down that could go either way with a field goal or you go for it and you aren’t fire up to kick a field goal, you can do that. I’m not saying that is the case here, but that certainly enters into the equation.”On what went into the decision to award Jordan Howard a scholarship…
“He is just a guy that has been in the program for two or three years now. All he does is work hard. He never complains and never asks for anything. He is one of the team leaders. There are times that you have guys and they are worthy of scholarships but you don’t have room in the scholarship count. We happened to have room, so we were able to reward him.”🚨SCHOLARSHIP ALERT🚨@TroyWilliams_3 does a great impression of teammate @jayhowwie, so we asked his help in awarding him a scholarship… pic.twitter.com/OC83hdp1TQ

On if Boobie Hobbs is the fastest player on the team…
“Well, he is one of the fastest for sure. He is in the top three or four. But I’d say Javelin Guidry is the fastest. He holds the California record in the 100 meters. We have a few guys that are sub-4.40 and Boobie is one of those guys.”On the importance that Boobie Hobbs’ speed on the field…
“It is a huge asset for a defensive back to possess that speed. He has that catch-up speed. So, when there is separation, he can make that up.”On how Josh Nurse is doing in practice…
“Josh Nurse is doing good. He is making that transition over to defense. He is willing, and that is over half of the battle. If the guy is willing and receptive to the position change, then they will have a chance. He has a lot of ability, it just a matter of absorbing the defensive scheme.”On what he is most pleased with on the field through camp…
“I would say the depth of the defensive line. We have 11 guys up front that we are very confident in and we think are ready to play. The secondary is coming along, the wide receiver group continues to get better every day and I think the offensive line is starting to come along. I don’t think the offensive line has come along as quickly as we hoped because we have had to shuffle the deck a little bit.”RECENT NEWS

I would rather have a mediocre kicking game and great offense than a mediocre offense and a great kicker. Urban showed us how much a kicker really matters if you’re putting up 40-60 points every week.

Agreed, but I don’t think those things are mutually exclusive.
