I found this quote from former Ute coach Wayne Howard after the 1977 game against BYU. It was his first year at Utah and he was shocked that BYU put Marc Wilson back into the game to set an NCAA passing record when they were up 38-8.
“This today will be inspiring. The hatred between BYU and Utah is nothing compared to what it will be. It will be a crusade to beat BYU from now on. This is a prediction: in the next two years Utah will drill BYU someday, but we won’t run up the score even if we could set an NCAA record against them.”
Utah upset BYU in 1978 – 23-22. I was there and remember the 4th and 19 pass for a TD from Randy Gomez to put Utah ahead late in the game.
Utah lost in 1981 to BYU in the last game of the season. The winner would win the WAC. Howard gave up college coaching after that game and an 8-2-1 season.

Those of us who are old enough to remember some of those games remember them running up the score and all the other ways they were classless poor sports. That’s why many of us hate them so much.

I may be in the minority, but I don’t really care if an opposing team runs up the score on my team. Maybe in little league I would care, or if it is an obvious disparity in level (i.e., a pro team versus a college team or maybe even a DI school versus a DII school). But once kids are at the collegel level and if the teams are essentially the same tier, do what you want. I personally would call off the dogs, but I don’t care if the opposing team does not. I almost find it condensending when the opposing team does.
