ParticipantInteresting, kinda long piece. Lots of predictions including 4 16-team power conferences and no more Big 12 (meaning the, uh, “nice” people from south of Orem might be rejoining us in a conference).

ParticipantThat would be awful. 16-team leagues suck badly.

ParticipantCurrently there are almost zero incentives for conferences to expand to 16 teams. All you’re doing is spreading out the revenue pie between more teams.
If the Pac-12 ever does expand it won’t be including BYU. Pac-12 expansion would most likely happen because the Big XII is collapsing and in this case they would most likely pick up the powers in the Big XII or get the left over teams such as TCU, Kansas etc etc… which wouldn’t be the worse thing in the world. The Pac-12 gains nothing by adding BYU & only spreads out the revenue from other schools to a school that doesn’t fit the Pac-12 profile in any way.

InactiveExpansion for the PAC 12 would come down to whether the added schools would provide incremental revenue, without lowering the research institution brand, superimposed with geographic proximity. Not hard to figure out that it’s not a target rich environment.

ParticipantExactly, the pac-12 is more likely to stay at 12 teams than invite schools that hurt their academic/research profile or that don’t provide large enough media markets for revenue.

MemberThe only reason any Power Five conference would take BYU is desperation. They bring nothing to the table for Pac 12 since they already have a media presence. Because of travel their only hope is a desperate Big 12.

InactiveThe one school in the West that makes a whole lot of sense media market wise as an addition to the PAC 12 is San Diego St. However, California’s design was to have the UC Schools be the research institutions and the State schools were non-research institutions. Over the years, that has blurred as many of the State schools have crossed over into the research side. Still there is that stigma and the UCs will fight it.
The other issue is what other school they’d take with SDSU? Boise St would never make it based on academics and non research status. Same with BYU.

ParticipantIf Texas would agree to drop the Big Horn Network Oklahoma & Texas would be a HUGE addition to the Pac-12 that would bring a ton of revenue.
The thing I hate the most about the potential Pac-16 is the possibility that Utah will no longer have annual games in Southern Cali. This would hurt recruiting.
Quite frankly I like how the conferences are aligned for right now.
