I’ve read most of the posts and agree with many of the things stated that need improving. I didn’t see anyone mention the lack of pressure on the QB with 4 down linemen, and more importantly allowing the QB to escape and make good gains.
This was a main reason for the loss at Florida. The defense had Florida in 3rd and long many times, and then allowed the QB to escape and make a great pass or run play. Going forward, if the Utes are going to compete for the PAC12 championship, pressure and containment of the QB has to be great.
ASU had a good, not great yet, QB, but the Utes were unable to cope with him without sending a safety or linebacker to help. When you look at the PAC12 teams the Utes face many athletic QBs that are athletic and can extend plays with their running.
Oregon States QB looked scary good this last game, so will be the next big test for the D-line. I will be looking for more improvement with each game.

The good news is that we do improve every game, each season. We’ll see what Morgan can dial up for this week too.

Oregon states QB looked scary good… but threw for 4 ints and 0 touchdowns

Gave USC the game on a silver platter. I also will say this. Utah’s defense is better than USC’s.

Penix and Williams scare me for sure. I think they are far better than Jones and even better than Richardson.
I felt like Utah’s dline has done their best so far. I recall a few RPO where they snuffed Jones. While against Florida those plays didn’t happen. Second half Utah definitely was giving him room and baiting throws. Penix and Williams won’t screw up like Jones.
Oregon State ran all over Utah last year. That was a weird game. Utah won the turnover battle, Time of possession but didn’t have BJ Baylor so they lost.-

Good news is, if we face Penix, it means we (and UW) are in the P12 championship game. I’ll take that!

EagleMountainUteParticipant
Ahh you caught what I was implying too quickly. Washington feels like the team Utah will play. Oregon will lose to them. They should win out the rest of the way.

No team has ever won the Pac-12 without a loss… not saying it couldn’t happen this year it’s just very unlikely
-
EagleMountainUteParticipant
For sure Narf. Looking at their schedule though they have a good chance.

5 sacks on the night, 3 from down lineman, seems good.

Gabe Reid has added significantly to the D’line these last two weeks. Great motor and intelligence.
-
EagleMountainUteParticipant
Gabe Reid will be starting most downs now at End. He has clearly earned that spot.

Nobody mentioned the “lack of pressure” from the 4 down linemen because there was. If the quarterback has to leave the position at the top of his drop there was sufficient pressure. Jones was off his launch point all night even when Utah was sending 4.
