Dampier or Wilson?

I’m indifferent at this point. Wilson gave us flashes of his potential and Dampier is good but not a great thrower.

So long as the starter spot is a true competition next season, I’m OK with whatever the decision is.

Dampier, no question. He has run Becks system as a starter and has clearly shown the ability to make decisions quickly. I’ve watched several New Mexico highlight games over the past few days, Dampier is decisive in what ever choice he is making in the RPO. Does his passing need to improve, yes, but as a total package Dampier is way ahead of Wilson at this point. Not saying Wilson can’t pick up the offense and do well, but it won’t be in the 2025 season unless it’s by QB injury attrition and that is not what we want to do again.

Not to be rude, but this isn’t even a question. Dampier transferred with Beck as his starting QB. Wilson will redshirt or be 2nd/third string depending on some on-going discussions with players.

Gonna take a look at the film, focus on the fundamentals, see who can take care of the football, play until the whistle is blown, and see who’s ready to back up Cam Rising.

It would be interesting if Nate Johnson came back as well. We would have Creed Whittemore, Dampier, Isaac Wilson, and Nate Johnson. All four of these players would thrive in a spread offense with all of them having the capability of RPO. I think Wilson would do much better if he was in an RPO system BTW. I’m intrigued by the idea of having all four of them on the field at the same time. Just remembering Tebow and Chris Leak and some of the interesting formations they ran.

Here are a few things I would presume were part of Wilson’s decision:
1. He is okay with being a backup for a season
2. He got assurances from Beck that if Wilson actually outplays Dampier during offseason then he could be the starter.
3. Wilson got no real good NIL offers from anywhere that makes transferring worthwhile
4. Utah is still giving him some NIL to stay put.

So my question about Wilson coming back is that doesn’t Beck run a more RPO offense thats geared towards a QB who is duel threat? wilson can throw but I don’t remember him being fast? someone correct me if im wrong…i feel like wilson would be playing an offense that isn’t best suited for his strengths…aka run.

He ran in High School. He had a ton of yards his Junior year and his senior year it got even bigger.

A long of 54 his senior year. He also went from 5 TDs to 13 his senior year.

I want to say he did this with his knee problem as well. Including the championship game where he rushed for 192 yards and 3 rushing touchdowns.

The fact that he wasn’t bolting at times and indecisive was weird. Which is why most of us were scratching our heads when Rose was able to make those reads much better.

I think we all saw a guy who could pass like Rising and also extend plays like Rising with his feet. Granted it was high school but he was the best QB in the State by a large margin I think.

Honestly, I think he needs a good mentor a an amazing qb coach and I think he can break out of his slump. He’s a gifted kid who needs guidance desperately, someone who is who his patient, firm, and won’t tell him what he wants to hear only.

This should not even be a question! Regardless if Wilson looks spectacular in Spring and Fall camps, he’s not ready and won’t be ready in the near future. Jason Beck was hired to improve the offense and has made coaching and player moves. I prefer to start fresh and let him showcase his offense for the 2025 football season and also hope Whitt starts being more transparent then he has the past two to three years. Go UTES!

Our go-to joke is, “come on offense, just be mediocre.” The defense always seems to be excellent, so the offense doesn’t even have to do all that much.

I’ll take whichever, but having seen Wilson, I’m leaning toward Dampier. I just hope they didn’t make any promises to Wilson in the re-recruitment process.

Based on what I have seen – I would say start Dampier this season and give Wilson a chance to learn and grow. Wilson was a great runner in high school. He ran for 200 yards in the championship game against a good defense. The RPO may be better for his strengths.

Until proven otherwise, Wilson is Jake Heaps II.

A parent takes an ordinary boy and pours tons of money into him by way of personal coaching and camps and the ordinary kid is now a teen aged superstar. Sends him off to camps to get exposure for the 4 star rating. This not only applied to Jake Heaps, this applies to practically every 4 star QB we have recruited. They peak at 18 years old and that’s as good as they get.

And we wonder why we did not see improvement in Wilson?

Wilson is just another boy who has had top level coaching making him an 18 year old stand out.

He has more upside, but I think it’s very little and it’s based on growing a little bigger and stronger. Other than that, I think we’ve seen the peak of Wilson’s abilities.

Dampier is going to give Utah an entirely new look. He’s one of just five FBS quarterbacks since 2016 with at least 2,500 yards passing and 1,000 yards rushing in a single season, joining the likes of former Heisman Trophy winners Lamar Jackson and Jayden Daniels. He did that while playing under offensive coordinator Jason Beck, who now occupies the same position at Utah. Dampier absolutely lifts the Utes’ offensive ceiling and his continued collaboration with Beck could produce some big offensive numbers.
