I have been out of the country since Utah made the amazing comeback against USC. I followed the board from time to time, but haven’t taken the time to post.
We played terrible defense against USC and UCLA (allowing over 500 yards) and had problems against OSU. We have serious issues on defense. I am a big Scalley fan, but I don’t think he has the studs to make this defense good. I am sure that KW and Scalley have been doing everything possible to put a plan together to get us through the rest of this season.
We can probably get by WSU, Stanford, Arizona, and CU with a less-than-stellar D. But, I personally don’t see us stopping Oregon with our current players.
What do you all think? Have we heard anything about changes?

EagleMountainUteParticipant
Defense did improve in the second half of U$C. …….something not done against fUCLA.
-
SalUteopiaParticipant
Agree with your assessment. I think the D will keep improving, but not enough to win against a top-10 team on the road in a must-win game for us (if we and UO don’t drop a game until then). Not to mention the woes on STs. Not trying to be pessimistic, just my observation.

EagleMountainUteParticipant
I think it is far too soon know definitively. I recall we were all very apprehensive last year with Oregon TWICE.
I think it is some recency bias we are all suffering from. I feel Utah made fUCLA look better than they actually are(ESPECIALLY DTR)Let the season play out I am excited for Wazzu and this is a nice step down from U$C so we will see massive improvement on those grounds alone. Stanford and Zona will also make us all more confident. Let the season play out and let’s see how Utah matches up in November.
-
SalUteopiaParticipant
For sure. I think the schedule lines up nicely to prepare for UO. Gotta take care business until then, starting this Thurs. Can’t wait!

You don’t believe we have any shot at Autzen?
If necessary, we’ve proven we can win a shootout & I don’t believe UO’s any more potent than USC offensively nor do I believe their D’s superior to USC’s.
Our defensive players started out young & inexperienced overall & they’re going to get a ton more reps in between now & then.

I said once SC goes up two scores I thought Utah had no chance. Well they sure showed me. Shootout accomplished, defensive stops made and Chad 2 point conversion really put me in my place.

Chad sounds like a heckuva player. We should use him more

ESPN’s FPI has it basically a pick ‘em game, with U of Nike a 51.4% chance to win and the early Vegas line is U of Uncle Phil -4.
I like the Utes!!!

SalUteopiaParticipant
We definitely have a shot. More than a shot I’d say. Definitely not waving the white flag. But it will be a tall order. That’s to be expected against a top-10 team on the road. Genuine question, when was the last time we won a road game against a top-10 team?
-
EagleMountainUteParticipant
Oregon in 2015 got spanked at home by Utah. They were ranked 12th. I would say that is close enough.
Utah can win in Autzen. Oregon’s defense is not very good at all. They are probably the worst defense they have had in years. If it is a shootout I would put money on Rising over Nix every time.

Utah beat number 8 ucla in the rose bowl in 2014. That was the last time we beat a top ten team on the road

ALUFParticipant
The time before that the Utah “Redskins” won at number 8 Colorado in 1961

Our defense laid an egg against UCLA, and struggled to stop three of the best offensively players in the country playing for USC, but did a decent job in the 2nd half.
this defense is not terrible, neither is the special teams. We just need to kick the ball out of the end zone. Not nearly the cluster it was last year.
-
pedroParticipant
If fairness, those are two of the best offenses in the country right now. Top 5 for sure

FUcla was moving the ball fairly consistently vs Oregon, but it’s difficult to overcome mistakes playing on the road. Utah needs a clean game, +turnovers and they can win in Eugene.
-
RedUte14Participant
Turnovers made the difference in the Utah vs UCLA game and the UCLA vs Oregon game.
