Vele had a very respectable 8 catches for 39 yards in his rookie debut today for the Broncos. Pretty cool to see him already having success in the league knowing his story.
His rookie counterpart in Bo Nix struggled mightily in his debut but it seems that Vele is already one of his favorite targets.
Yep, everything Nix threw (and connected on) was mostly short. Nix was like Wilson – you could see the struggle with the increased speed and talent and getting used to a new system and teammates. Broncos have the most Utah players (even without Tim Patrick).
So does Vele’s success confirm what we already kind of knew? The only question at this point is how much of it is a Rising problem, and how much of it is a Ludwig/Whitt problem? Of course, its only a problem if you care about WR production. If wins is what you want, it isn’t necessarily an issue.
Watching the last two games, I’m increasingly convinced that it’s a Rising issue. Rising seems to love his TE and RB’s. I think it’s because they are usually safer throws. Whereas he doesn’t inherently target the WR’s as much. It feels that when he has, it’s a designed play specific for the WR’s.
