If so, he’s to blame for this loss.

Yes. It what he does every BYU game. He is insufferable.

I think they were opening up the playbook when things were working in the 2Q (more passing plays), but the positive plays didn’t carry over into the 2H. Then Rose threw that horrible INT at midfield and that really killed the confidence and the offense regressed. Rose is an effective rusher but his passing was mediocre at best.

Also I think we really missed Kuithe.

The WR ran a corner rather than a post, Rose immediately started yelling at him.

Rose had some really good passes that went barely over LBs that required some touch we haven’t seen in a long time. He’s a good passer and That int is on the WR.

I agree the receiver was at fault on the INT (I think it was King); however, there was also a safety waiting right in the target area to make a defensive play and Rose threw a weak ball under pressure, so I highly doubt that play converts even if King makes the right cut. Nonetheless I think that play was a major confidence/momentum killer.

Rose made some nice passes but he also threw several late and inaccurate passes when he had time and the receiver was relatively open. Off the top of my head I can think of three fairly straight forward passes to Singer (2) and Kuithe (1) that he whiffed in the 2H. He should’ve improved as the game progressed, but he went from I think 8-10 in the 1H to 4-11 in the 2H. Overall I just wasn’t impressed with the consistency of his timing and accuracy, but of course this was only his second game of significant action. All that said, I do think he is the better option compared to Wilson. Rose seems to be more poised, is a much more dangerous mobile threat and the players seem to support him more than Wilson.

I’m not sure how you think that Int doesn’t turn into a catch if the receiver runs the route the QB thinks he is going to? Looked like a good touch pass to me with plenty of room for King to settle in the zone and make a play. Instead, King turns to the sideline and never even looks for the ball.

            The pick is at 3:16

You’re right, that’s a good pass. I misremembered Rose as throwing that pass while scrambling under pressure and remembered in the replay the ball just floating right to the safety.

He wasn’t as crisp in the 2nd half and Hill did a good job of giving him different looks. To me, the bigger problem on that play was you had a receiver who hadn’t gotten any targets this year and a QB in his first full game. That’s probably a play that Rising/Kuithe or Kincaid make in their sleep.

Watching it again, the better option would have been to double clutch and decide whether to stick with the route King ran or throw the mesh to McLain who was open but that’s something he will learn if given time.

The personnel decisions with this team are sometimes baffling.

Why is Alford throwing the HB pass, hasn’t played all year.

Why is Landen King, a lightweight TE, in to run block on that critical 3rd and 1?

Why is Quimari Shemwell, an unused FR, in for Snowden on the Chase Roberts backbreaker?

Should we be surprised with the bad outcomes of these plays when the personnel involved have little to no game reps?

no comment. just felt that needed to be highlighted

This goes back to Whittingham’s overall philosophy:

Get up by 10 points and shut everything down.

And it’s bulls**t. Instead of blowing bad teams out and getting your second team reps, he shuts everything down. So in big games and in big moments when he needs depth, he doesn’t have it.

Instead of going into halftime up 21-10 (and in reality 21-3 momentum wise), coming out offensively and putting up 14 in the third quarter and turning it into a 35-10 game, he takes the foot off the gas and loses.

The game has passed him by. The sport is set up to score points. The days of being able to get a lead and bleed the clock are over. QB’s outside of Utah are too good. Offenses outside of Utah are too good.

You want to win 10+ games, you have to be able to put up 35+ on teams like BYU. Like every team in the Big 12.

And Whitt doesn’t want to do that.

I’m not looking forward to a KW 2.0 under Morgan Skally, Utah needs a high powered spread offense like the Mayer years.

Hopefully Morgan SCALLEY is smart enough to use is eyeballs and brain to know what has worked and what hasn’t under Whitt, and makes changes accordingly when it is his time.

My thoughts exactly. Great point Tony.
