Washington Redskins being forced to change their name. Next will be the Cleveland Indians, Atlanta Braves, FSU Seminoles….
Not sure when and where this starts to die down and stop. But it’s certainly only gaining more momentum right now.

Not a shocker. When they became a university they brought in a very “progressive” President and the other hiring followed suit. Professors who had been there for decades were run out, long time local members of BOT were run out or resigned. A “student leader” located a yearbook from the 80’s with three students dressed as NWA at a halloween party with black face and accused the school of supporting white supremacy. This resulted in the mascot change. The transition has been an intermittent story in Utah newspapers for quite a while.

I’m just waiting for people to start calling for the changing of America’s name to Africa. But wait, that’s actually racist so nevermind. We need to call it Xmerixa or something because somehow that’s not racist and sexist and homophobic etc.

Africa? why would you want to change the name to Africa?…Gringoland would have a better shot at getting it through congress. Maybe “The United States of Gringolandia” would work.

We need to get the Vikings, Yankees and Patriots to change their names next.

It’s funny that you find it necessary to try to identify conservatives for us, like you’re trying to impress somebody, or shame those identified. I guess maybe you do it because you think it somehow invalidates them, their argument, their statements, whatever. You have to let everyone know why you think that, and putting it out there is merely a puerile shorthand for you to take a shot at someone you don’t respect. In the end, nobody gives a s**t Pace.

FSU is like Utah. They have an agreement with the Seminole Tribe to use their nickname.

Liberalism is a disease. A complete disregard of fact and predicated entirely on misguided emotion.

Classical liberalism doesn’t exist as we know it. This is neo Marxist/post modernist bulls**t.

I’m so glad y’all found a safe space here, away from all that political talk that has no place in sports and was ruining other Utah fan boards!

Central Coast UteParticipant
No place in sports? What’s your opinion of Kaepernick? Lebron James?

For what it’s worth, all of this stuff the last two months is not a measure of black progress. It’s a measure of white progress with respect to how they treat everyone else. Not sure why a name change for a state college in St. George somehow is threatening to white folks, especially those with no ties to the old South. The article didn’t even figure out that the school was called Dixie because Mormons grew cotton there when they colonized the southern part of the state. St George is one of the fastest growing cities in the state. Might as well give the local college a name that is less backwards.
FWIW, the Utah football team was the Redskins in the 60s. Does anyone think we should still be that? Does a relationship to the tribe with scholarships and official support and a constructive relationship seem like a bad thing to anyone? A lot of this stuff probably should have been fixed a long time ago.

While I don’t agree that Dixie St needs to change their name, it’s unfortunate that this idea of “progressiveness” had come too little too late. Back in 2007, there was talk about affiliating Dixie St with the University of Utah, and changing its name to “University of Utah-St. George”. Had they changed both their name AND their “Rebel” mascot (which for the record, I liked the “Rebel”), they could have been a branch of the U.
Maybe the 2 schools can revisit this proposal in the near future, and still make it happen.

That’s an interesting proposal

And the Cleveland Indians become the next domino to fall. Maybe the Atlanta Braves or the Kansas City Chiefs are next…
