I think a matter of time before CFB’s NIL will burst into a thousand pieces. I don’t think it is sustainable long term as we are seeing negative affects it is having on college sports in general. NIL is destroying the integrity, ethics, and moral, specifically with football and spilling into basketball.

Significant effects could be felt if and when fans stop watching and attending games. Academics won’t matter much with some of the student atheles making millions and drowning schools and donors of NIL resources and affecting the moral of teams and programs everywhere.

I also see schools, programs, and student athletes taking legal action against each other when an NIL commitment or responsbility has not been fulfilled.

Very challenging and bad times for college sports.

At this point, I think everyone agrees. I just don’t know how they’re going to put the genie back in the bottle on all of it. There’s too much $$$ at stake. I think it will ultimately take an act of congress to get this fixed, but my confidence level in that being done successfully is pretty low based on the results they usually get when they try to “help”. The other way is for TV sets to be turned off, but the ones that matter to the networks will still be on.

      Good times.

Yes college sports needs a governing body. One that has a set of enforceable rules, with a pay scale for athletes. But they can not institute ridiculous rules like the NCAA did. If not, parts of college athletics will be fading away. Interest is already starting to wane.

I keep saying this and I keep getting downvoted, but this is unregulated capitalism.

Extract all value until it’s worthless then move on from the wreckage.

You need regulations to have something sustainable. You can’t just let corps (colleges/NIL’s) run free with no restraint.

This is such a great real world experiment of unfettered capitalism.

It is not unfettered capitalism. If it was that, you’d already have a College Football League of 32 teams and everybody else pounding sand. Do you think if it was unfettered capitalism both the B1G and SEC would be filled with legacy bottom feeders like Miss St, Purdue, Vandy, Iowa, etc…? I think not…

You keep getting downvoted because you don’t understand Capitalism but blame it for everything you don’t like. “Unfettered Capitalism” is just Capitalism with an unnecessary adjective in front of it to make the speaker sound impressive. Just like Raw Milk is Milk.

Sports leagues by definition are Marxist, not Capitalist. Equal distribution of revenue, worst teams getting first choice at incoming talent, setting regulations to keep teams from gaining competitive advantage, minimum salaries, collective bargaining, salary caps.,, none of these are ideals of Capitalism.

Which is why professional sports work and college football is falling apart. This is basic, basic, basic s**t. It just isn’t what you want to hear…

I think what will happen is that some players will get screwed and they will realize that they need to have a players union, that will lead to collective bargaining and regulations that will be “mutually beneficial”. Right now it’s just one way but as soon as the players start feeling as though they are getting short end they will demand regulations. Capitalism has a way of regulating itself. Gonna be a crazy few years until that happens.

But do you think that universities will go along with what all of that entails? I’m not so sure. Universities weren’t created to provide entertainment for bystanders and employment for athletes, which is what all of this is. It’s a textbook case of mission creep and the tail wagging the dog. Personally, I believe that if things go that route, what universities will do is license their NIL to the NFL and let them handle all the mess in return for a royalty check.

Oh yeah… At that point it’s semi pro and might retain names of universities for tradition/location but will need to be separate from the university structure.

            Without a doubt…that’s the way ahead…
