Ghost of the HEBParticipant
Utah vs Ohio State in the Rose with Oregon vs Georgia in the Orange (CFP).
I like the idea, but this means we lose two in a row to Oregon. Things change week to week, but as of now I honestly I honestly think Utah has a really good shot at beating Oregon Nov 20. It is very hard to come into RES and beat Utah. Utah’s won something like 19 out of last 20 home games that have fans in the stands.Bowl projections are bonkers after the initial CFP rankings pic.twitter.com/1v6cSF0Boh

Good lord that would be interesting. That means they’re predicting an 8-5 team in the Rose Bowl.
-
SalUteopiaParticipant
Would we be ranked at 8-5? It seems that if a team is not top-25, they’re not obligated to go with the runner-up.
-
UtesbyfiveParticipant
8-5 assumes we win all but the two Oregon games.
-
ColumbiaUteParticipant
You’re correct about the runner up part. Just because we are the pac 12 runner up, it doesnt mean we get the invite to the Rose Bowl if oregon goes to the playoff. It’s all about tv ratings and the rose bowl will pick a highly ranked team non-AQ team.

It’s a fascinating scenario when a loss INCREASES your access to the Rose Bowl.
-
UteFanaticParticipant
There is a legit chance Utah could win out, earn a P12 title and Rose Bowl appearance.
There is also a chance Utah could lose to Oregon twice and still make a Rose Bowl appearance.
We went from two early losses in row, thinking this team wouldn’t even be bowl eligible, to having a great shot at a Rose Bowl appearance.
What a fascinating, rollercoaster of a season.
-
UtesbyfiveParticipant
It’s non-zero for sure.
-
-
MDUteParticipant
There’s no doubt in mind this team is good enough to beat Oregon and win out. Clearly, our offense is good enough and I would argue is the best in the PAC 12. For me, everything depends on our young defense. If our defense can eliminate the mistakes and blown assignments, this team can absolutely win out and beat Oregon twice in a row. We will go as far as our defense will take us IMO.
-
AZUTEParticipant
It’s what’s good for the Pac12 vs what’s good for Utah
-
alUmnUsParticipant
Maybe this will jump-start Oregon to play more inspired football.
But you know what, I think the likelihood of Oregon dropping 2 of their last 4 games is high.
I think the probability of Utah winning out is also high. In these scenarios, I’d rather not see Utah vs. the Ducks twice in 2 weeks.
-
UrbanLiarParticipant
So either beat the Ducks twice or lose to them twice. Project “No Split” is underway!
-
gandalfParticipant
Or if they split, win the second time.
-
UrbanLiarParticipant
A great reward of roses but the PAC 12 gets shut out of the Playoffs in that scenario.
-
Ghost of the HEBParticipant
Hence why we desperately need CFP expansion and automatic qualifying for P5 conf champs. It’s so dumb that we have to go over the pros and cons of us potentially winning a conference championship. I’m highly certain CFB is the only sport where it’s potentially damaging for you to win your conference championship all because you aren’t ranked high by a committee, which then eliminates your conference from the official post season tournament where the big money is made.
-
chinngiskhaanParticipant
and that matters because??? Are we Pac12 fans, or Ute fans here? Oregon beating us twice is 100% bad for us in every possible way. So yeah, Oregon doesn’t make the playoff, boo hoo hoo… sucks for them. Until we demonstrate that we are capable of winning the pac12 outright in it’s worst of times (aka this year), we have absolutely ZERO reason to give two craps about the perceived strength of the conference. Once we’ve won the CCG multiple times I’ll start worrying about what other people think of the Pac12, and hoping for other teams within to do well.
To be clear, so long as we are ahead in the south race (as we currently are) I’m perfectly happy cheering for the Oregons of the world to win out… until they play us. That doesn’t mean I want them or any other team in the conference to be actually good though.
Making a Rose bowl is meh if we don’t win the conference championship game.
-
CharlieParticipant
There is not a circumstance where it is best for Utah to lose a game.
-
2008 National ChampParticipant
not to mention that on almost every occasion the team losing the CCG has been passed over for the top bowl game, including 2016 which could be similar to 2021. Should Oregon win out and make the playoff, there is no guarantee that Utah losing in the CCG would get the Rose.
Colorado was passed over for USC in just that scenario. Would 8-5 Utah get jumped by 8-4 Oregon State or WSU? I wouldn’t bet against it. I could even see Utah dropping farther if somehow ASU gets its collective crap in gear and finishes 9-3.

MotherJabubuParticipant
all because they’re trying to sell 2 SEC teams in the playoffs
-
MDUteParticipant
Only way 2 SEC teams get in is if Alabama beats Georgia in SEC CCG, leaving both teams with 1 loss. It’s possible and if that were to happen then both should be in as 2 of the best 4 teams in CFB.

GameForAnyFussParticipant
This discussion about Rose Bowl scenarios is exactly what’s wrong with college football.
